Me and my girlfriend want to do a bikepacking trip to Rijeka (Novi Vinodolski) -> see marks in screenshot)

I am really inexperienced in building a route via komoot. I thought of riding part of the Alpe Adria and then turning left/right in Villach. Do you have any recommendation or route maybe even via the islands (Krk etc.)

We have 10 days (500-600km) and prefer bikelanes and gravel roads.

Thanks for your help! 🤝

  1. on komoot, there are salzburg gravel route suggestions “die zarte” and “die harte”

you could follow die Zarte until you need to change directions

been biking a lot in the area, also Novi Vinodolski just weeks ago 🙂 Love the northern Velebit national park above it. The coast there is ok but nothing special. Try to avoid the magistrale main coastal road, super busy with trucks motorbikes and tourists.
Basically: so many options how to plan your route. Another road that I really wouldnt go again (after I did it twice and just hated the super heavy traffic: the road from Pivka – Ilirska Bistrica ( – border) – Rijeka. Until the Croatian border, its the traffic of a busy highway cramped onto a small street. But just at the border, on the croatian side, a highway towards Rijeka begins, and komoot will lead you an super nice streets with almost no cars. Personally I will get the train from Pivka-Rijeka next time.
Alternative: finding small roads on komoot from around Ljublijana (save river) – Krka river – Kopa/Kulpa river (hidden paradise!) and then to Rijeka. Viel Spaß!

the options going south from Villach: following the Alpe Adria to Udine (Tagliamento River) – lots of reitred people on e-bikes, super scenic, just downhill, or, if you are really fit: going over the Vrsic pass from Krajnska Gora to the soca valley.

  4. You mention nothing about your bikes, load you will carry or experience regarding riding in mountains.

People I met there lately complained a lot about the first sections of A.A. south of Salzburg that goes on a shoulder of busy road rather than a bike lane. I took a route [through Berchstesgaden Park](https://mapy.com/s/kobecugaze) to Weissbach bei Lofer which lets you avoid the traffic after you get out of the Salzburg. There was a section or two of singletrack, but it was easilly rideable with a loaded gravel bike, only on the descent from the Mordau-Alm (which I rode at night) I wished I had proper offroad tires that would deal with the sand over hardpack better.

If you don’t want to hit the Hochtor pass (slightly over 2500m asl), you may need to follow a bike lane from Zell am See towards the Lend and Bad Hofgastein (tunnel under the high Tauern should be open again right now), to get to the Alpe Adria.

Another optional detour is in Spittal an der Drau. Instead of riding along the lake, you can turn south and climb Goldeck (or jump into the cable car and climb only the final ~200 vertical meters). Then you can enjoy over 20 km long, mellow descent over the scenic road to Zlan, then back to A.A enxt to the Drau river: [https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycletouring/comments/1lpzjji/comment/n28bq8o/](https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycletouring/comments/1lpzjji/comment/n28bq8o/)

Around Villach there is nothing spectacular, but on the other hand taking a shortcut to Arnoldstein sounds like a longer ride in traffic. Travisio – Gemona section on the Italian side is one of the trip’s highlights. Palmanova may be interesting, but rest of the ride between Udine and Trieste is so uninteresting that wouldn’t hurt to skip it with a train and spend your time riding somewhere else.
