I just received a Specialized Prevail 3 (size M) that I ordered online, and I’m definitely returning it because it showed up with a July 2022 MFR date. That feels way too old for a new helmet, especially given the EPS shelf life.
Now I’m debating whether to:
1) Track down a fresher one at an LBS, or
2) Use this as a chance to try something completely different.
The Prevail 3 fits great (comfortable in both width and length), but the front looks really bulbous. I know that’s partly the tradeoff for the air cage and excellent ventilation but I’m trying to decide if it’s just vented and aggressive, or does it actually look mushroomy / beluga bulb on my head?
If I go with a different helmet, these are on my list:
Giro Aries
POC Cytal or Ventral Air
Kask Valegro or Protone Icon
Abus Airbreaker 2.0
I live in SoCal and run really warm and mostly ride leisurely, so ventilation while looking good (and obviously safety) are more important to me than aero.
Would love thoughts on the Prevail 3’s look. Thanks!

Looks good m8
Fit is good, FYI I just received my Evade 3 last week from Specialized and the Mfr date is June 2022.
It’s a great helmet for Socal Weather – it also looks great IMO
I do think ALL helmets look a little mushroomy, just no avoiding it.
I’d suggest it in White though.
