Sad but true, as a Dutch citizen it's a sad reality, (bike) thieves, pickpockets, even rapists if from non European descent even when caught in the Netherlands wouldn't even have to get locked up for a year, it became a joke of a country. Can remember when was younger could leave our doors unlocked when playing outside. Demographics have changed I guess.
Not Netherlands, but I used to live in a big city in Germany. Every time my bike got stolen I bought a cheaper bike and a more expensive lock. At some point I arrived at the combination of a 350 euro bike and a 120 euro lock, and this bike didn’t get stolen anymore. In my opinion, the cheapest bike that’s good enough is the best bike for the big city, because it’s still there when You need it, while an expensive bike likely isn’t, and even if it gets stolen, the cheaper the bike the less You lose.
Is it really that bad in the Netherlands? It didn't seem so in 2014 when I visited but then again the country was nicer and less "enriched" then. Here in America with a crappy old mountain bike I am chaining both wheels to the frame with heavy chain locks and at least one of those chains wrap around a fixed object if its not possible to do both. Hasn't been stolen yet.

I’m Dutch, and I regularly forget to lock my bike. But it’s so ugly it never gets stolen.

I am in France and i lock the saddle to the frame, the front wheel to the frame and the frame to something strong. 200€ of locks…

We used to be able to do that in the Netherlands too. But we are no longer a high trust society
Here in Florida if you ride in the bike lane not the sidewalk cars will get angry and even sometimes hit you.

In Dubai bikes don’t need locks because most people don’t use bicycles 😁
