I'm not a serious mountain biker. I get to the trails about 6x a year. I also live in South Florida so the trails I do get to are mild at best. I still love it.
I do 35-50 miles a week around my community for exercise. So basically 95% of the time im riding, its on pavement.
My bike is (i believe) a '14-'16 GT Backwoods Sport. Honestly I love it and feel very comfortable on it.
So that brings me to my question, as its due for a tune up.
The gears have started slipping regularly, like 4x per 7 mile ride.
Since I love the bike, im considering maybe upgrading the drivechain to something like Shimano Deore. And then I guess replacing the tires which need it.
But at a certain point its like, I might as well get a new entry level bike? For what this work will cost. Im essentially upgrading an old entry level bike.
Then you go on FB marketplace and I just want to buy a $2k bike thats been sitting in someone's crawlspace for 3 years for $600.
So thats my question for you all. What would you do based off my situation and bike? And around $600 being the max id want to invest.

You could get a 1×12 complete drivetrain from Jenson for under $400 and then get a couple of tires for another $150 and you’re probably good to go. For the type of riding it sounds like you do that might be the best option. You might just have a stretched chain which is why your gears are slipping so that’s an even cheaper option. Anything you buy used is going to need some work more than likely in your price range but you should also check out BuyCycle or Pinkbike if you want to go that route. Choice is yours. I’d get a new bike with newer suspension/geometry but all I ride is mountain so it’s not the same situation as yours.
