Put your tires on and inflate them without sealant. If it holds air, add sealant and you’re done. If it doesn’t, then retape.

It’s a skill that takes time to perfect. I find warming the rims gently with a heat gun helps with fit and adhesion.

  2. Just put a tube in and pump it up to like 35psi and leave it for a while. It will smooth it out and likely make it more uniform.

  3. You can use a hair dryer and heat up the tape and make it smoother. But generally speaking it’s fine. As long as it holds air relatively well.

But next time you tape you want to slightly pull tighter. Personally I usually buy a tape that’s wider than the actual rim width. Eg 23 width I buy 25. And I would stretch the tape as I’m installing it so it’s perfectly flush. And it’s totally ok to have a little bit of tape on the rim wall. As long as it’s not all the way to the rim lip

  4. The tape job is sloppy to a degree. You could either make it so that there’s no air bubbles and it’s all completely pressed in, or take a chance and send it knowing it may or may not fail

  5. Doesn’t matter what it looks like as long as it’s air tight. Looks fine. Mount those tires.

The worst thing you could do is air bubbles, when applying tubeless tape put you in the middle to prevent a majority of bubbles from appearing, and it will take patience to get it right.

It’s fine, I’ve done worse and I’ve ridden on them for 2 seasons so far

  8. I’ve had a similar looking tape job with the same brand of tape. So far, air is holding well and i haven’t had to add any more air in the past month. I’d give it a shot assuming the valve hole is sealed and the valve is tightened correctly.

  9. I don’t love it.

Like others said here, heat it up then use a tube to press it all down and you should be good.

After you do the tube overnight, put your tubeless tire on and add air, see it if holds overnight, if there is still decent pressure then add sealant and send it!

All in good faith but In the spirit of my coworker when I showed him my first tape job “that’s fucking garbage”

Pull hard as fuck with your thumbs! Really want to stretch that puppy out. Air bubbles are a no no

All I can say about tubeless is that it is a PITA. People have to acquire the dark art of properly taping rims (among other dark arts) just to get it to work.

Gluing tubulars back in the day was far easier. And, in fact, tubulars are probably still the best tire technology, at least on the road.

  12. Has anyone used 3M 4412n extreme sealing tape? I’ve used this on many supermoto (17″ street rims) and never had a failure. 3M is top quality product and this stuff is thick and sticky like a fly/mouse trap and seals ridiculously well. I use a width that covers the spoke ends but not up on the tire/rim mating surface.

I had the same issue. Get it as tight as you possibly can. I did find when i did a job like this if you actually get a tyre on there the pressure pushes the rest of the air out and it becomes nice and flat. Try that first without sealant. If that doesnt work redo it. Im not sure why the stuff ks so rigid though. Feels counterintuitive.

If the tape isn’t pushed down in the center if you run thicker sidewall tires / dh tires and use a tire lever you’ll pop the tape .

Try it out and see how it works.
