Hi fellow commuters 🚴🏽‍♀️

Sharing a picture of my new (second hand) bike which I purchases recently to commute to work. I've been commuting for the last 10 years with a Focus Mares AX (Gravel bike) and decided to go flat bar.

It's a Trek FX Sport 5, and I've added a few bits to it like the quick release Ortlieb pannier and the mud guards.

My commute is 30kms one way, and I normally do 2 days in to work in the week.

I'm still adjusting to the flat bar setup and find I'm not as comfortable yet, mainly hand positions as I'm new to flat bar. I've ordered some SQLabs innerbarends to see if this helps with an additional position ok the bike. Overall it's been good.

Let me know your thoughts if you've done a similar transition to flatbar for commuting and any valuable tips to share.

Thanks all 🙏🏽🚴🏽‍♀️

  1. I have a similar ride, the Trek FX 3. Its very suitable for my 10km daily commute (factory work so no WFH) but like you I found flat bars uncomfortable and swapped them out for bars with a 30 degree rearward sweep on them; keeps your wrists at a more natural angle and lets you sit upright more. Might be tricky to do something like that with the internal cabling though. The FX 3’s cables in the cockpit are external.

If the opportunity ever comes up I’ll probably change the bars again for something with even more rear angle. I wouldn’t mind bars similar to what you find on city bikes in the Netherlands.
