*** Hello from Weimar. – The city of Goethe and Schiller. What would they think of Weimar today? 200 years after their work: Where would they go? What would they organize? They can’t tell us anymore. But you, Wolli. – You too, please, Schilli. Together we’ll rediscover Weimar. Stop! Your hat will fly off. Yes, because we’re discovering architecture. With and without frills. Great art. – Big arrow. The delicacies are as modern as the Bauhaus. Classics are also served. Someone’s frying us a sausage. – Bratwurst still exists. We meet travelers. And what is your opinion? Goethe or Schiller? Has to be Goethe. What’s new? – And what’s left of us? I want to fill Friedrich Schiller up to the brim with amoxicillin, grab him by the shoulders, shake him like a 1.80 m doll. A city. – 7 tips. The stage is set: #hinREISEND in Weimar. *There’s a knock.* It must have been here. Wolli? Great, Schilli is already here. Why did I tell him I’m an early riser? The bed is made, fine, but where’s my coat? *There’s a knock.* Yeah, I’ll be right there. Maybe in the study? I worked all night. How can you get up early when you’re working instead of sleeping? Wolli! All these tours signs everywhere. Unbelievable that people pass through my chambers almost every day. They’ve bagged my coat. Wolli? There’s my coat. Great, a piece from the permanent exhibition. Then I’ll just go without it. Wolli! *There’s a knock.* *Wolli whistles.* Schilli, dear friend, what a reunion! Just a minute, Faust 1. – Faust 2. That’s how it’s done these days. Speaking of Faust 2, how are things going? I’ve written 80 new verses. We’ll quickly take them to my library. It’s not far. Just a few minutes to the famous Duchess Anna Amalia Library. We can see if we left any traces. Wolli, look, Schillerstraße. Well, Schilli, but also here: Goetheplatz! Can you explain why everyone’s staring at us? Maybe we overdid it with the shoes. Everyone wants us to grin into their magic box. Schiller, Goethe, and Mephistopheles, in one picture. And who’s that? – That’s Mephisto. In the Mädler Passage, Auerbach’s Cellar, 500 years. Oh, Leipzig. – We know Leipzig. We even made a film there. #travelingthere We’ve linked Leipzig for you. Similarly devilish. Oh no, how beautiful. In Weimar, you can visit more than just your house. Perhaps I haven’t been completely forgotten. Do you remember how we used to stand at the window in the evenings and check whether the other person’s light was still on? Yes, but today the passage blocks the view. Who would have thought I’d one day have the prospect of my own department store? I’ll take the lead, dear friend. Which of us tells you more? Schiller or Goethe? Actually, we studied both at school. But you wanted to say Schiller. Yes, yes, I say yes. Yes, you’re welcome to say that in front of the Schiller House. But in front of my house, I would have only accepted one. The “Faust” theme year sign is also here. That’s cheeky in front of my house? – Cheeky in front of Schiller’s place. But where is the library now? Weimar has changed, hasn’t it. But the library is where it always was. It’s also open. Dusting is done here regularly. Is that you up there? – Possibly. Where do I put my new work? The shelves are full. You’re not allowed to read here anyway; visitors pay to marvel. Did you know that the library burned down almost 20 years ago? God forbid! – You can still see the damage here. Some books were brought through a tunnel into the modern study center next door and thus saved. In paintings, you can still see what the books that fell victim to the fire looked like. They were painted with the ashes of the books. Unimaginable. Your latest creation has a place here and can be read, too. Our tip: The novel section. It’s completely underrated. And you can hear many foreign languages here. Do they know us? – Let’s just ask them. And your opinion: Goethe or Schiller? Definitely Goethe. Point for you. Oh good, very good. – Make it two points. Which of Goethe’s works do you like best? When I get home, I’ll read them all. I believe you, God bless you. And Mephisto too. Your name is known all over the world. I need a break from our competition. Oh, stop. I want that too. – Then I want that too. You can rent such moving bikes. For example, at the tourist information office. Just go and ask if there’s one left. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to reserve in advance. Half a day costs 10 euros, the whole day 18 euros. In just 3 minutes you’re in the middle of the park on the Ilm. Here I am, poor fool that I am. – And I’m faster than ever before. With all its enchanted ruins. There aren’t just ruins. The Roman House, for example. I had that built for the Duke. And today anyone can see his bedroom. Free entry. What happened to your hair? And your cap? Wolli, your summer house is still standing. – Oh, and the windows are cleaned. The curtains are new… …and the bike parking too. When were you going to tell me about it? – In its time, noble friend. Even my summer house is popular. You meet art lovers and nature enthusiasts here. What’s left of Goethe? Is there anything left of Schiller at all? It’s Faust year, I don’t even appear anymore. What’s that all about? By the way, I’m a teacher at the Schiller-Gymnasium. I’ve been condemning this for many years. I have to say that Mr. Schiller always gets short shrift in Weimar. Yes, tell me more. Finally, another point for me. – You deserve it. Wolli, Wolli, Wolli! – What? Shall we dare to have a dance? – At this time of year, in this park? Yes, others do it too. Good luck, pass us our… *Pop music* Curtain up! Curtain up! Forward the knife! Zack, zack! Zack! Zack ! The park on the Ilm is often used for sports. Some clubs move their training outdoors in the summer. You should always bring your sports gear. Theoretically, though, only members are allowed to participate. Theoretically. *Birds chirp softly.* But sometimes there are taster courses that anyone can take part in. Qigong, for example. Here you learn how to breathe properly. And change direction. *Birds chirp.* After so much exercise, I’m feeling a bit low on sugar. *Wolli whistles.* What’s up, Wolli? Was that your retirement? Not at all! But don’t we want to try beekeeping? Better stop for a drink. The German Bee Museum is no longer the only one, but it is the first museum about bees, honey and beekeeping. It is located at the other end of the Ilmpark and can be reached quickly by bike. Here you can learn not only how things work with the bees and flowers, but also what things were like in our time. And of course there is one thing that cannot be missing in a bee museum: real bees. What do we have here? What could they be? Wolli, don’t just snack, do some work too. School groups in particular get to see this on tours. *calm music* The German Bee Museum is not just theoretical, but also very practical. You can see how what the bees collect in Ilmpark ends up in the jar. This is sweet chestnut, you can even taste it. Something completely different. Oh, it’s tart. Almost heavy. Almost like Herder. You can buy it in the farm shop, too. Everything the bees produce. Honey, wax, propolis, royal jelly. After so much sugar, I need something hearty. So shall we whizz back into town? I’m curious to see what delicacies have been discovered in the last 200 years. Then we’ll return the bikes and stroll through the alleys. Who likes Goethe? And who likes Schiller better? *Everyone laughs.* See? Cheap trick, it doesn’t get any cheaper. We could go to “Gretchen’s” right next to my house. *It beeps.* Schilli, is that beeping in your house? It could also be your tinnitus. No, no. What kind of witchcraft is this? When the bell rings, the food is ready. When flash and vibrate, please take the meal. I told you. Something blew onto your bread. But the flowers look lovely. And what do you have there? Bread flap toast with shaved zucchini slices and lemon cottage cheese. We had that every day on my trip to Italy. And what do you have? An egg-drop sandwich, shokupan filled with scrambled eggs, Comté, and Sriracha. Cheers. How about dessert? But something less modern, please. There’s even Goethe-Schiller ice cream. Vanilla nut. You’re the nut. Schilli, if I were you, I’d have a scoop too. I have my scoop. How about a visit to the brewery? Brewery? I can’t see it. You’ve got your glasses on, sir. – Well, on. Since when do you spell brewery without an R? Oh, it’s Bauhaus University. Here they don’t brew, they build. Here, visitors can see what is being taught today in architecture and art. If you don’t want to be alone, students can guide you on a short or long Bauhaus walk. From the budding architects, you can learn what the old architects had in mind. And you can feel the campus atmosphere. Straight edges, round, straight. I can tell you, Wolli will love it. The old scientist likes natural forms. He says even a blind person should be able to find their way around the building. Wolli, what’s that? Cubic, simple colors, simple shapes. Great art. – Big arrow. Among the students, I feel 200 years younger. Do the young people know who we are? But you recognize us? Yes, from the 11th-grade advanced German class. Do you remember it well? Which of us is better? Goethe or Schiller? Schiller. But I love Goethe too. Schiller. We read and memorized Prometheus. Is that still done that way? Yes, I got 15 points. – My heart is warmed. I could use something warm in my stomach right now. There’s just one problem: the grill is already off. Excuse me? 4 p.m., and you can’t get bratwurst in the heart of Weimar anymore? Yes, but from the pan. – With mustard? Although a real Thuringian eats his sausage plain. Now the question for you: Bratwurst with mustard, ketchup, or anything else? Leave your verse in the comments. The young people suggested we participate in a poetry slam. Poetry slam, that’s a poets’ battle. For that, we have to go to Mon Ami on Goetheplatz, how could it be otherwise? The youth and cultural center offers all sorts of concerts and cultural events. I’m curious to hear what modern poetry sounds like. I want to fill Friedrich Schiller up to the brim with amoxicillin, grab him by both shoulders, and shake him like a 6-foot-10 puppet. so that the many pills rattle in his body. Goosebumps, foam at the mouth. I haven’t just read “The Glove,” I am the hand. I’m so deeply involved in the subject. That young people are so interested in words. But now it’s our turn. – The old classics reissued. People even knew your Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Flow, flow, many a stretch, that for the purpose… This must have made them so happy right away, they called after me, Wallah wallah, at every corner. We two are equally great subjects of poetry, no matter how short or long the rhyme was. We stand for that with both our names, Schilli. Wolli. (both) Thank you, Weimar. *Applause* You can find more travel tips here. Well, Wolli, that was our day in Weimar. Yes, and now? – Well, let’s go to sleep. No, poets come from close. So back to the Bauhaus, but this time the one with R. Oh my Goethe. Copyright UT: MDR 2025
