The rear derailleur is destroyed and the derailleur hanger is bent. They can be replaced. There might also be other damage not visible in the pictures (in particular damage of this type may be accompanied by broken spokes).

Replace the derailleur hanger (good luck with that) and replace the jockey wheel system

Get a new derailleur, 8sp or whatever it is. I don’t think pull ratios have ever changed on 8sp shimano MTB stuff, so your existing shifter should be fine.
Probably a new chain while you’re at it
You might need a new hanger, though I’d see how the current one straightens up first
Changing a derailleur is piss easy – just google it
Park tool’s vid on setting up a rear derailleur should get you sorted.
Just might have to get someone to straighten that hanger. Bike shop can do it if you don’t have a mate with a hanger alignment tool.

you might be able to bend the derailleur back to let it get you to and from work once or tice whilst you look for a replacement but it will never shift like it did…

That chain is crying for lube

You need to replace the derailleur and probably the derailleur hanger. Nothing expensive, but take care of your chain a little better in the future.
