[Music] Haydash welcome on your uh thank you sir for inviting me again. Uh last time we spoke in the March now. Yeah thank you. Yeah, Utkash you are presently in very reputed universities which actually uh students in India are well aware of about because you know RWTH technical university that is a reputed technical university in Germany at the same time why most of the students are aware about this particular university because you know the admission is through I mean gate is one of the criterias it it’s in couple of universities so that is how they are aware there and it is also very reputed technical university. So today I’m going to discuss with you now it is your second semester going on there in technical university RWTH and uh you have got some kind of you know uh research scholarship also there now in the second semester that most of the Indian students aspire for and Germany has become one of the favorite destinations now I must tell you and many students from the capable you know from the very premium institutes are aspiring to go to Germany now. So our today’s introduction is going to be very very uh useful for such students. I start with your brief background utkash. I’ll request you to tell all the viewers here about your background uh in which background you have done your undergrad and from where in India and uh about the course which you are pursuing in RWTH. All right sir. So basically I belong from Vanessi and I completed my mechanical engineering back in 2017. uh after that word I was working in the corporate sector only uh for like 7 years. The plan to go for the masters were there but like the covid hit and then I had to kind of postpone that and uh afterwards u I was looking for a program which kind of can be an amalgamation of like technical skill as well as the manager skill and which can have a good scope and can be a niche uh sector. So in that quest I found about sustainability management and u I then uh applied for RWT university and uh I had made a couple of list actually like 500 courses but luckily I got uh like like you know the uh first click and then probably from there I joined the like uh this particular course and yeah now at the moment I’m uh in my second semester. Okay. So, so let me ask you uh couple of questions quickly. And your undergrad in mechanical engineering, right, Kash? Yes, sir. And then the job which you did uh that was in which domain? Okay. So, uh the job was not related to mechanical engineering. Uh it was most of like like business development part and into the B2B and B2C consultancy and uh so like it was a kind of shift. So back to the like you know studies. So it was not completely related with the mechanical engineering. Okay. So so you did job not related to mechanical engineering and now you are into a course which we can say techno managerial course sustainability management. I’ll discuss more about that. So there are so many uh students I was talking to one student today itself in the evening. He’s from biology background but he wants to pursue career in management and you know purely management courses in India also cost a lot and he was asking that can I get into some kind of course where you know it is managerial at the same time linked to somewhere to my domain. So what is your take on such kind of requirements of the students and about the course which you are pursuing. So uh I think uh it depends on individual choices like what drives you. So for me when I was doing mechanical engineering so back then um I knew that okay there’s no such job scope in mechanical engineering. So the original idea was to go for the gate and it was a very big uh competition and uh then I figured out that okay u like I was getting the job then I was like let’s go for it go with the flow and when I got the job I started uh feeling that okay I’m probably not utilizing most of my potential. So I was like uh I shall do something which requires me or which can challenge my brain also. So uh in that thing I think that it’s all about like inner calling and I think uh if you have a good technical background and if you can you know have this management kind of a skill as well. So it is a very good u combination which probably can work out. I mean uh you are running own organization you can understand that also like you know you have the if you have the technical understanding then probably you can give more uh precise uh you know decision you can give uh take the good decisions based on your expertise so probably um at the moment I think if uh one want to be only in technical it’s okay you can go for that one can be in management also but it depends on your preference what you want to prefer like So yeah. Okay. Wonderful. So, so Utkar, now coming to RWTH, this is one of the reputed uh you know technical university almost uh comes very close to 100 rank or uh world rank and that is wonderful university. So can you suggest uh students sitting in India the timeline to get into this university for MS program? I mean uh admission is twice a year but in RW is it twice or is it once only? So timeline and how a student should you know prepare himself. All right. So basically timing summer intake intake but most of the time people go for the winter intake because first time in courses. So if I can remember probably for the university mostly winter now. Sober and it is advisable to apply as early as possible. So if you talk about the timeline then I can suggest that one if wants to go for the winter intake then that person should be done with all the like documentation uh GRE exam toel or is examination before the November and then onwards you start applying uh say from the December onwards uh to the particular colleges which you’re targeting and particular courses which you’re targeting and yeah so this should be the particular approach and uh probably you can get the call by I would say uh January or something and there’s a catch also because I remember like I was targeting only two colleges initially uh that was RWTaken university and TM university but the issue was like uh TUM starts as portal from the 1st of the April and uh I got the intake here and they wanted me to confirm it. So I had not option to kind of apply for the TM. So it also can happen. So you have to kind of give something like you know excuse or I will take time or something something so that you can have a good window. Okay. So so so what I understood is like utkash there is only one season of RWTH uh for admission and that is a student who is aspiring to join RTH to start his process of application in October. like if he’s planning to join uh in 2026 uh October he to start almost one year before uh in October in 2025 and early he applies better it is in case he’s looking for selection because they will if they find right candidate they will promise them or they will provide them this particular seat so now my second question to you you mentioned about GRE and these kind of requirements I would like to ask you like many universities in Germany do not look for GRE So is RWTH looking for GRE and if yes is alternate is GATE can student with GATE score think of applying in RWTH? Yeah. So there are so many courses especially um related to the mechanical because I was seeing certain courses uh like I remember it was related to CAM or something and they were asking for GA score as well. So it’s specifically mentioned on their website. So I mean if you have the gate score and people know here about the gate examination then it is going to definitely add on something on your profile and they look for the holistic profile. So I mean if you are giving like it’s not like mandatory for even my course it was not mandatory to give the G but if you do so then it is going to you know fulfill all the uh boxes. Okay. So, so Ukash now to do self assessment or the candidate let’s assume I am sitting here listening to you and I want to know whether I can get into RWTH or not. So to the candidate who is listening to us what parameters will you tell him for self assessment this is the first question very basic question from them. Yeah. So uh I remember in 2017 actually I heard about Jakan University and that time I heard and I was decent, not the topper but like a good student. So I thought thing which is like suppose you should focus on your marks decent marks you should if you’re not like having the topmost marks because few of the autonomous colleges give free marks right as compared to say other colleges so you can show that in like you can have work experience which can support you or like particular uh your motivation later is very very important that’s what I heard that if uh your CV they look for the CV and they see okay how much genuinely you’re interested in so instead of like say applying say for like 100 or 500 universities target few courses first and then go for the universities and really work on your motivation later and your CV so that it can look that okay you are just not applying for the sake of applying but actually you’re interested for that so yeah so just to like focus on your marks focus on GRE uh IS score uh if you can have work experience that’s trade and yeah so overall holistic uh approach one should see so if you’re lagging in something it’s okay but try to compensate that with the other so so very good two points from your entire this input one is like if you think you will get it you will get it r no doubt is a big name anybody will fear you need to dare to you know apply and Number two, it is not one parameter. It’s a combination of the parameters. It is like cover letter. It is like you know your CV. It is your CGPA. It is your college and experience and whatever. I mean combination but meticulously concern or meticulously apply to probability. So instead of keep on applying in many places focus on a couple of places but apply that is what I understood right. Now coming to Udkash the scholarship part uh just now you told me before we started this recording that you have got research scholarship also please tell us more about that and I believe you are in second semester only as of now. How could you manage the research scholarship and what is the relevance of that? Okay. Uh so uh sir the idea was actually uh I when I came here so my idea was like I spoke with lot of seniors so they said that focus on your studies and German is skill in the first semester and from second semester onwards try to go for the job hunt and u at that point of time I like for the first semester I didn’t went for the job search or something but in the second semester I started actually I have this habit of conversation with the professors because uh I actually want to do PhD uh I don’t want to go back into the corporate world at the moment. So I was like always I was used to ask the professors like if you have any position uh then you can let me know something and I was doing in the first year also for the first semester and it didn’t work out that well but I think I was too desperate and I was asking so sec in second semester I was talking to professor Sandra and she had this particular uh vacancy because they get a lot of project funding and they wanted to start this project and it was related to bioconomy. So I kind of planned entire thing like I made a presentation I said like I will pitch to you for this position. So it was um at the moment I’m doing the job as part-time job that is the uh uh like research assistant. So uh which I’m like catering to my professor and uh uh it is in research center ulish. So it is a very uh profound uh research center which is affiliated with RWT University. So uh it is uh not only giving me say the economical benefit but also an experience which uh I can leverage upon uh because as I told you like my uh area of interest is academia at the moment. So I want to do PhD. So yeah. Okay. So, so that means it is the funding you are getting, it is a scholarship you are getting within the university itself and in the second semester and as uh contrary to the perception like if you want to get a job in Germany, you should know Germany but I believe that is outside campus jobs but to get these kind of research jobs I don’t think you need to know language that is German language. Uh so here I have a actually different take. uh so because um I think if you at the moment you can see uh like Germany is also having a sense of I won’t say recession but like economic slowdown because of the situation war and stuff like that. So at the moment uh you have to also see how you can be the best candidate in the market and uh so it’s like more like uh you don’t want to get rejected and let’s get honest. So what happens like if you apply for the jobs and they usually ask for the German and if suppose you don’t have the German skill so there’s high probability you can get say canceled out. So my advice to these student who will be trying to come here is like at least get a B1 level of German and then you can start here and work upon your German and so that because what happens if you I biseect the job market so it’s like 50% filled with the German jobs and 50 with the English jobs and like interesting thing is if you go on the LinkedIn if there’s an English job so within a day there will be like 50 applicants but if you go for the German job within a week there will be only five or 10 applicants. So you can see the difference and competition is less for German jobs. So I mean yes good I mean if you I mean it’s a I think Germany what I have is like I got one actually one more job like outside campus job only and that was the English job only. So what I understood that that if you’re really passionate then you can get the job. I didn’t opted for that job. uh I uh chose to do this job because I wanted to get into the academia but I have understood that if you will apply so you have to apply to lot of jobs but if you are consistent and you’re willing to do so then uh you will get the job for sure okay now now coming to finance part utkash what we know is like when you get admission in uh German universities uh you uh need to block some amount I mean that is 11,000 Euro or something that means in Indian currency it comes out to be somewhere around 12 lakh rupees you need to block that and if you don’t get scholarship then there is a you know your living expenditure or something so uh what are the opportunities because there are so many students Indian students who say that we want to go to Germany public universities are there free universities are there so blogged amount is there but we don’t have even money for that so what will you suggest to those students from India who wants to study in public universities of Germany but they are afraid of blocking the amount money and even if they do that they are fearing that from where the money will come and how we will survive so please tell more about that sir so I think it’s only me who has not applied for the loan whether they backing from my parent can you speak it because there is some kind of disruption coming okay yeah now I’m audible yeah now you’re audible so um so uh I think lot of the students who have been studying with me have applied for the loans actually and uh these block accounts are nothing but kind of your amount which you can probably use to stay here without any fear of losing on money or and eventually uh say like here like net estimation which I have done because in the ark I’m not talking about the other uh cities so generally it’s like 700 toβ¬750 you have to kind of uh spend like monthly including everything renting, eating, uh health insurance, everything. So uh so the idea is like if you think oh I can’t afford it or something like that. So it’s okay you can take the loan and when you come here you can look for part-time jobs which are say like which probably will you can’t see show that on the CV but like you can work in the restaurant or you know food delivery something. Uh so if that is your concern then probably you can and lot of people uh do that and they kind of and not only suppose in 1 month uh generally the blocked amount you get is I guess 990 something. So if you will suppose work the um like uh the job in the restaurant also then also you can cover that money. So it’s like it’s nothing uh I would say that difficult to kind of earn that much. So that means along with the studies you can earn that much of money and it is not a problem right. Yeah. If like if that’s like you concerned like oh I have to give this much blogged account amount or something. So it’s okay I understand it’s a bulk money. So you don’t have to actually do that. I mean it’s easy to get the study loan in India. That’s what I heard like five to 6% of only over there. So you can go for that and you can probably if you think oh I have so much of loan on me so it’s okay you can go for say the uh unskilled jobs if in the starting and you can return that money. Yeah wonderful that is a good idea. So uh no utkash there is APA certificate and after 2022 I think it’s compulsory to have APA certificate to pursue masters in Germany. tell us more about that and how much is the duration, how much time it takes to get APA certificate. All right. Uh so uh so APS certificate is very important. Uh and uh before applying for AP certificate you have to see that is your uh college is recognized by the APS or not because I heard few of the students uh who is from the good university but there somehow the college was not uh recognized by APS so your application would be rejected. So uh that is the point number one and second is like the duration at my time was like 30 days. So I got my degree so certificate in 28 or something. Okay. So so when you apply in these universities is there application fees? Yeah. So uh there’s an interesting question. Uh somebody was also asking me this. So uh uh there’s a like for the RWTH university you don’t have the application fees uh but for the other universities what they do that they have this uni assess kind of portal so you kind of I think 50 or something you you uh kind of put and then from there you can apply to different number of uh particular colleges or universities but I’m not sure about that aspect because I applied only for one uh position Okay. So, so though you have made it very clear that you are looking for as of now academic journey ahead and maybe you will go for PhD and all but I’m sure you can throw some light on kind of job market or kind of job opportunities to the students from this university prestigious RWTH. Yeah. So also it depends on your course as well because uh like you know uh like Germany is meant to be like hub for the mechanical engineers and RWTH is known for mechanical engineering but at the same time uh this moment uh there’s economic slowdown. So for the people who are working in the mechanical engineering department specifically to mechanical engineering department they are facing this issue like they’re not getting the jobs because there’s a transition phase. they are now moving from the uh say fossil fuel based cars to the electric cars or something. So uh at the moment uh if you have to also see like in your sector what is the job demand. So you when you’re planning to go for the say Germany or RWTs so you have to fix okay which course I will pick and what are the scenarios afterwards because eventually you have to come here and then you have to also survive so you have to be very smart about it about your choices. Okay. So, so can you give some example if it is in your mind that what kind of course like if you’re a mechanical engineer who is come for this course. All right. Uh so u against so like automobile engineering I used to hear it was good but at the moment yeah economic slowdown is kind of uh it is affecting uh the particular market but I would suggest at the moment if you see something which is related to renewable then for sure you can go for that and u I mean you can go for something which is like related to like production engineering and which can uh you know mix with the managial aspect because you will have lot of electives. So like management anything related to management or something can work out for them. Yeah. Yeah. And I mean it’s not related to mechanical engineering but I think it is very important now that uh you if possible try to also go for the uh data analytics kind of course also because uh uh at the moment Germany wants that also. So if you have that kind of because at the moment I’m not from IT background but I also have to use Python or something. So if you have this uh knowledge then you can definitely you know can um expand your horizon for the job market also. Wonderful. Okay. So so now Utkash coming to again your university you are a brand ambassador of your university and uh I will ask you a question why somebody should join RWTH in Germany. Let’s so uh firstly it is I would say weatherwise it’s like one or two degree less than the normal German. So okay it’s good to be here and the best part in Aken is that there’s a good like I think 40,000 something students are there. So it is like all the city is filled with the students or something. you will have a good opportunity to kind of network people and probably uh and I think uh there’s a scope for everything like if you want to go into entrepreneurship there’s a scope for that uh the professors are very easily accessible there’s no hierarchy between the students and professors so I mean if you’re really interested in doing something or creating something it’s the best place to be here so yeah so and 40,000 means a big university from German perspective because I’m very sure then there will be so many courses uh you name it and it will be there in RWTH right yeah it is the largest uh university in the entire Europe so yeah and unlike India like when we go to IIT when we go to some central university we find that it is blocked and there’s a you know wall and within the wall there’s a university so is it like open city kind of culture in RWTH what kind of culture I even don’t know how many uh uh like buildings we have. So like sometime we have classes in one building and sometime at the other building. So and they are at a distance kind of large distance one building to other building will be like 2 km or 3 km distance. So that so space wise is a huge campus right? Yeah. Yeah. And it is very lively because and uh like different people from different nationality coming here. So it’s a good opportunity to kind of learn and okay so so utkash as a mentor I get opportunity to interact with lot of students uh back home in India and I keep on interacting with them keep on mentoring them one of the student was asking me today that sir IIIT are also within 200 ranks so if I’m getting IT Bombay why should I go to Germany why should I join mast’s program in Germany as a mentor I gave him one point I said no doubt I are wonderful No doubt professors are wonderful. No doubt infrastructure maybe machines or academics you will study will be same. But I strongly believe that the kind of exposure the kind of diversity you are going to get in these campuses is entirely different. I would like to take your point of uh view on this. If some student ask you why RWT and uh in comparison to premium institutes in India. So what points in that support will you give? So uh my will be like if you are really interested in say academy or something. So here the professor get a good amount of funding and if you suppose work under a new professor and that professor will be say an alumni from Howard. So that professor might be having a good networking or connection. So you can basically if you show that reference of that particular professor then I’m sure in India it will be valued highly. And uh like if you come here and uh have the exposure of say working in a in a research center then people know actually that Germany is like popular for its research. So if you kind of work here and get the you know experience and references here and networking here then for sure it will be a really value addition. So yeah. Okay. So, so when some candidate when some student joins some universities abroad it is also in his mind to spend some years or maybe permanently to be in that particular country. Now when we see the geopolitical situation evolving now uh people look for safe heavens. They look for those countries where they can you know say stay safe and they can progress there. They can contribute to those countries or uh communities. So how is Germany from that perspective? Okay sir. Uh so uh I mean every country is kind of suffering because of the geopolitical scenario. Uh but I think uh Germany has a strong foundation especially in terms of research. So yeah u that’s one thing you have to like look for as a positive thing and secondly uh apart from even the economic slowdown u I mean still people are getting like jobs like I got one English job initially but I didn’t opt for that I got this like work job also so I mean if you like want to like uh get a job or something and you have to just do what hard work and you are probably able to do that because you’re from India here the reputation of Indians are very good that they know that okay they are hardworking people so you just you have to show the passion and it is good like you can you know get the at least I I that’s my understanding like in the research field yeah there’s a very good option uh for the job market at the moment uh I’m not sure but yeah the research field there is a good option okay so typical class of MS students comprise of uh students from which part of the world uh okay it’s an interesting So I think I have in my class like 15 16 nationality students are there but yeah generally you know that Indians are largest in the numbers Indians are there but luckily in my course actually because lot of Indians don’t know about sustainability management uh so we are the inferior one like we are having a less number of Indian students mostly uh from like uh if but if you talk about like from Singapore or from Hong Kong from Australia uh from Germany also and from Turkey and uh yeah so like I think uh all part of uh places students from all part of the places are my course at least but if I see on in the on the street then I would say that Asians are the most and in that if I have to say like uh like Chinese or are the most in the number uh then followed by Indians and then the rest of the other like Turkey As far as the population wonderful. Okay. Now, now Utkash one question which is in the minds of every student they want to ask it and that is if not from RWTH there are so many other public universities. WTH comes into very universities but yeah that’s a good question it’s all about like you have the script that then it works like for me I can see a demerit for me is like for examp if you really are passionate then you really want to find the job and you are ready to do hard work then be It does not matter that you have to be from the top university or something but yeah there’s a scope of job for sure or uncertaint but you have to live with that obviously obviously and I believe government gives you 18 months after your masters to stay in Germany and find a job am I correct in that yeah wonderful okay so utkash uh that brings me to end of my questions and this session but uh anything which I must have missed or anything which you want to advise the prospective students of this university who aspire to join RWTH. Yeah. So uh my uh key advice will be like look for the course first then the college second uh if you are planning then look from the all the aspect do the proper research on the subject then come here because I met one guy from the material science and he was like oh why I’m doing this something like that. So you don’t have to be that guy. You have to be sure like why you selecting this course and then uh if possible start learning German as well before coming. So because you will eventually get say not Adalutaken University but some other university also or maybe private also but if you will have the German so German language is not just a language it’s a skill here. So you can leverage on that. Wonderful. That is a very good piece of advice at least because uh the moment you get admission and then you have couple of months to join the campus. So that is a time when I think students can acquire as you said it is not the language it is a skill and it helps you to get the jobs in the uh country and that is very good. So uh ut let me thank you once again for the time you spare to you know help all of uh us here with your information and these information firsthand informations are very very important for someone to uh check out the strategy for his career uh you know uh in countries like Germany. So thanks a lot again Utkash and we wish you all the very best for your journey ahead. Thank you sir. It was my pleasure to talk to you again and thank you [Music]
