My little guy is making quick work of learning how to ride on two wheels and it might be time to move up to the next size. He’s currently riding a 16” wheel size trek precaliber. I might be able to raise the seat another inch, but that’s about it.
So, I’m considering the following 20” wheel size bikes: precaliber, precaliber 7 speed, and the wahoo trail. Before making a purchase, I do have a few questions.
For those who went through this process, how long did the 20” wheel size bike last before upgrading to a 24” wheel size? Did you find the precaliber (or similar) to be plenty for the riding they ended up doing? If you purchased the wahoo trail (or similar) did your child actually take it out on the trails?
Thanks!

Most 9 year olds are big enough to ride 24 inches. A quality 20 inch bike, with upgrades to lighten it, is pretty much bombproof. You’ll be able to sell it for basically what you paid, minus a small depreciation. I think all my 9 years kids were on 24s this season. Even the tiny one, who’s bike was like all carbon and GX upgrades. Oh to have enthusiast parents.
One thing to consider is whether or not he can actuate traditional shifters *easily*. On my daughter’s 20 I subbed grip shift once I realized she had to use her entire hand to shift. Once she moved to a 24 (Trailcraft Pineridge…silly $ during COVID) she was able to move the XT lever just fine.
