  1. You can buy rolls of “helicopter tape” (I think the idea is it protects rotor blades on helicopters). I cut sections of it to prevent rubbing from cables or straps at strategic locations on my frame. I think the brand I have is “RACERS TAPE”.

“California cross” cable routing. Pretty much switching which housing stop you use for which shifter and crossing the cable under the down tube. It’ll keep the housing away from your head tube.

Helicopter tape is the ideal, but honestly just some painter’s tape will work. Depends on how vain you are. My beater touring bike has this area wrapped in electrical tape, for example. Looks crass but works fine.

You can get some rather thick transparent plastic stickers. Some are called stuff like “Bike armor” and similar. I have it on my frame where it’s exposed to cable rubbing and a long strip under the down tube to minimise rock chips.

    or

    2. Wrap the cable with a piece of Velcro tape. Use the ‘hair’ side, not the ‘claws’ side.

It’s not gonna do much damage. Just use spray detailer to get rid of the buildup.

For everyone mentioning helicopter tape: why is it better than just boring old clear packing tape?

You can buy a roll of 3M PPF (paint protection film) on Amazon for cheap….the same stuff car enthusiasts use. I have PPF protecting my chainstays and underside of my frame.

Just head to a local bike shop and explain it and they’ll either sell you the correct “protection sticker” or tell ya where to get one
