I accidentally ordered the wrong headset and got an ISO 26.4mm crown race instead of the 27mm JIS size needed for my 1” fork.

I found some 3D models online, rescaled them to fit, and printed a few test pieces. They worked surprisingly well, but I couldn’t reuse the gasket that came with the headset.

So I designed my own version with a split race for easier installation, since I’m using a sealed bearing cartridge. It doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth—just needs to sit properly.

Printed it in PETG with 100% infill. Just finished installing this new version—haven’t even taken it for a test ride yet. Fit feels solid, and I made sure it works with the original gasket.

I’ll still order the proper 36° 27mm crown race eventually, but I’ll test this one out for a bit. Honestly, I think it’ll hold up just fine.

Do you guys think I’m nut

  1. I don’t know if you’re nuts, and I admire the spirit of experimentation, but my brain can’t figure how this would work for any length of time.

  2. I once printed one out of PLA as an emergency solution, and ended up using it for over a year. It was slightly deformed when I took it out, but was performing just fine.

As you’re using a sealed bearing cartridge that has its own race, it’s not the race you printed but rather a fitment help.
So it will work I think.
