Meet Chip!

My summer job as a wildland firefighter has kept me away from home quite a lot this year, but I've finally had some time between fires to put together my latest bike project!

I've built quite a few bikes as either restoration projects or out of parts bins at bike co-ops, but this is the first one I've built up from entirely brand new parts. One thing that has remained the same across each of these builds has been an inexplicable urge within me to adorne generally low tier frames with unreasonably nice parts. In this case, I was able to buy this brand new Poseidon X frameset for $175 and decided to go nuts with the rest of the components to build it out. The parts list is as follows:

-54cm Poseidon X frameset in their 'Dune' colorway
-Microshift Sword 10x derailleur and 10-48t cassette
-Microshift Sword brifters
-Jagwire cables and housings all around
-Campagnolo Ekar 38t crankset
-Tektro MD-C550 mechanical disc brakes
-Superteam 50mm wavy carbon wheelset w/ Novatec thru-axle hubs
-700Cx45mm Continental Terra Trail tires running tubeless
-no name carbon seatpost
-Ryte 3D printed carbon saddle (Specialized Power Mirror knockoff)
-Redshift Kitchen Sink Bars w/ top and drop grips and Redshift's gravel bartape
-eBay special bar end mirror
-Rockbros bar end bell
-Rockbros motion activated tail/brake light
-Rockbros platform pedals
-a super cool handmade stainless steel front rack I found on eBay
-some super duper cool handmade Zebrawood fenders I also found on eBay
-and finally a Snack! brand chocolate chip cookie frame bag to tie it all together.

So far I've only put about 30mi on it and couldn't be more happy. The Redshift bar system is unbelievably comfortable, the wheels seem to be remarkably good quality for the price, and in general I am just really happy with how it turned out. I won't be doing any races on this bike and built it as a broadly capable commuter to handle my 12mi ride to town on some pretty mixed surfaces and so far I think it's going to fit the bill just fine.

Let me know what you think! Did I build a monstrosity? Have I cooked up a truly modern randonneur? Should I go back to building parts bin bikes and leave the fancy components for fancy cyclists?

What a sick ride! Love the colorway and how it all ties together. Really digging the frame bag! Happy riding!

  2. Love it. Really digging the fenders! Goes well with the dune colorway. Recently swapped out 2×9 Sora groupset on my Triban RC500, with 2×10 Microshift sword, and threw on 40mm rear, 45mm front tires (somehow fit the frame and fork). Absolute gravel monster. Blown away by how good microshift’s latest groupsets are. With decent brake pads, and 160mm rotors, mech brakes work decently well with jagwire housing. And it’s all easy to work on at home!

I did the same thing with the black version of this frame, same cost. Pictures forthcoming. Congratulations!

I did not know that, but it doesn’t surprise me as the fulfillment and customer service was exemplary.

That is a sick bike. I got the x dropbar gen 2 as a whole bike but plan to upgrade it into a really nice bike one day. I’ve put about 150 miles on mine so far and it’s been great so far, but I’m looking to do wheels and tires soon, and I want to change out the advent x stuff to match the sword shifters. Eventually wanna go TA, but upgraded my QR skewers for now and haven’t had any issues.
