Hey guys,

As the title states I need your help fault finding an issue with my bmx.

I bought it second hand two weeks ago and have been riding it a couple hours each day. Bought it for cheap and am wanting to restore it. Its in fairly rough condition, and I want to replace parts that require attention.

It has a 3 piece crank and as far I can tell – the issue is here, however I am new to riding bmx bikes so Ill take any guidance I can get.

I have attached a video that I hope captures the issue but i’ll also try to explain it as best as I can.

When I pedal, each side makes a loud click or clunking sound when I get to the bottom of the rotation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thankyou !

  1. Bearings in the driver are cooked, what you’re hearing is them being grinded into powder.

To asnwer your question about the bearing lifespan, it’s hard to tell and there is no one answer to it. Properly maintained bearing should last a very long time. In bmx, we put a lot of stress in our parts, bearings included. If your bike isn’t built properly and your hub cones are loose your bearings are at a greater risk of being damaged, same goes for your headset, if it’s loose, not greased and you keep landing front wheel heavy they will die sooner than they should.

Take care of your bike and it will save you money in the long run.

    It depends
Some last couple weeks some years
But usally if i change the sprocket chain etc it makes sence to change the bearings aswell
Since you have the bike already apart
