After reading a two year old thread in this group, today I replaced my stock 50-tooth chainring with a 40-tooth one (and a shorter chain), and what a difference! One commenter on the old thread said that he went from using two gears to all six, and I concur. People mentioned how the 40-tooth helped with climbing hills and mitigating the effects of aging bodies, both of which are of interest to me since I have a tour in Scotland and northeast England coming up at the end of the month.

    I don’t see why Brompton insist on a 50t from the factory, I run a 44t and the gearing is so so much more usable. 40t will definitely benefit you though in the Scottish hills speaking from experience they can be brutal.
