Put slight tension on the chain, apply a little pedal pressure. When new condition the left will not drop in. The varying degrees at which it does “drop in” correlates to the wear.

Maybe not? Squeeze where indicated, then try to insert the left side. It kinda looks like you’re doing it the other way around.
