Had a really lovely ride up the south downs on my 1995 rockhopper yesterday evening. Found some nice new trails and enjoyed the climb up for the great views.
Spotted a new to me bridleway on the way home that was a long descent straight back into town. Was ripping down the multitrack trail and had a split second of brain fart and tried to switch tracks to avoid some brambles. There was a ridge and I absolutely stacked it at about 15-18mph. It’s amazing to me how many thoughts can race through your head while you’re hurtling through the air….
anyway, skinned my elbow and my hip and bruised my rib. smashed the back of my iphone and ripped my shorts. I was lucky it wasn’t way worse.
the bike did a pretty epic somersault over my head and landed in a bush. The basket was smashed to bits and the rack pretty badly bent. the bars are deformed by about an inch inwards on the left side.
here’s the worst part though….. I wasn’t wearing a helmet. Needless to say I ordered one as soon as I got home and won’t be adventure riding without it again. I’m sorry for being such an idiot.
Now it’s new bars time! What can I get that’s low budget friendly with 31.8 clamp, good rise and sweep? I’m waiting for the bullship from stridsland to be back in stock but will need something basic to ride until then. Appreciate it if anyone has any good ideas.

safety first kids!
Mistake 1 : it’s a rockhopper not a bramblehopper mate, you should’ve known it wasn’t gonna work ! /s
Soma Dream bars come in two different heights — I use the Hi-Rise — and have good back sweep. They are 31.8. ETA: Oops, may not meet the little budget friendly criterion.
