Hello! I am planning on doing my first Ironman 70.3 next year and am looking for a starter bike around $1000. First question is would the Giant Defy be a good road bike to at least start out with to race a 70.3 with? And if so would this be a good deal for the bike? I am very very new to cycling so I’m still very much in the process of learning. Thank you!!

  1. Well those aren’t 105 brakes and you would have to buy new levers in order to get them. Those TRP brakes are some of the worst on the market and if you need to adjust stem length or handlebar width the one piece handlebar is useless (plus it doesn’t really fit with the round spacers). I’d keep looking and prioritize fit over speed for your first 70.3.

You’ll get better info here if you show a picture with the drive side.

A defy might not be a terrible choice overall. As the other commenter noted, this one in particular would need new brakes. Those are atrocious. The fact that they said “upgraded to 105 brakes” is a red flag.

Without a picture of the other side, I can’t speak to the rest of their “upgrades”
