Exactly one year ago, we were cycling around Iceland’s ring road in the midnight sun. 840 m over 21 days. So, here’s some rapidfire questions on how we did it and a bit of what we learned. Did you fly with or rent your bikes? We opted to fly with our bikes, and it was a lot easier than we thought it would be. Which direction did you go? We went counterclockwise around the ring road. Not sure what led us to make that decision, but we did have a headwind most of the time. How was the weather? Wet, windy, and cold. At one point, we had to spend 48 hours on top of this structure in the middle of nowhere to hide from 60 mph winds. Be prepared for anything. Was the road dangerous? I mean, yeah, it was definitely sketchy at times. You got to keep your head on a swivel and make decisions accordingly. We had a group of seven, so I feel like that helped with visibility while riding. Did you plan each day? Roughly, yes. We knew how many miles we had to go each day, but every morning we would pick out a campground as our destination for the day and start pedaling. Which leads me to camping. We stayed in paid campgrounds pretty much the entire time with a big group like ours. It made the most sense. And all of the campgrounds were incredibly lovely. Let me know if you have any other questions. Still to this day, one of my favorite trips ever. Oh, and we got engaged towards the end, so that was cool. I got a ring on the ring road. We need to find time to do another bike tour because it really lives up to the hype.
