If it works, it works. Commuting doesn’t have to be pretty, it’s about functionality. There are hybrid options that can both attach to the rack and be worn as a backpack (usually with a flap to make the latter option more comfortable), but those that last (like from Ortlieb) are typically rather expensive.

….That said, get you some Voile straps.
Way lighter, faster/less hassle, can be stuffed in a pocket, don’t rattle when strapped to the rack without a bag, rustproof (I like the nylon buckles), etc.
Though I have a strong bias against ratchet straps – I almost always end up fighting with them.
Just remember to always make double sure that the backpack straps are firmly tucked underneath. If you ever forget, they will flop around precariously close to spokes. At least that’s the reason why I stopped attaching the backpack to my rack in this exact way a long time ago.

Been doing the same thing recently. I got a secondhand bike with a wider back rack and it works just fine!
