Re-doing my post, with a better video:

I'm trying to remove the cassette from my rear wheel (Specialized Fuse). This is my first time actually doing it myself, though I’ve seen it done in person and have watched a number of how-to videos. I'm using a cassette lockring tool and cassette pliers to hold it. When I first take the wheel off the bike and start loosening the lockring, everything feels normal. But after a bit, I reach a point where it won’t turn anymore, and then I get this loud ping. After that, I can turn it another full turn before it tightens and pings again. This cycle keeps repeating.

I attached a video to show what’s happening. Is this just a stuck lockring, or am I doing something wrong? TIA

First time removing a cassette. What am I doing wrong?

  1. Can you just pull the casette off with some force once its fully loosened and starts clicking?

  2. Keep on turning. Sram cassettes are screwed on over a significant lenght. Shimano uses a locknut with a short thread lenght

  3. I’m thinking stripped threads. It seems to be twisting anti-clockwise way too easily.

It’s possible that the cassette is just stuck on the freehub body. Does the cassette move at all when you pull it away from the spokes with even pressure on both sides of the back of the cassette?
