This is Days 3 and 4 of biking across Austria into Germany. This part of the ride reminded me to focus on and enjoy what I love about bicycle touring. The bikepacking trip through Austria has been a dream of mine, and as silly as it sounds, figuring out how to approach it in the way I wanted to was part of the challenge.

[Music] the ride today started out and grind Beautiful city on the Danube River Has that classic oldw world look rolling hills around it But today was about figuring out what I want from this bike packing trip
It sounds so stupid but it’s crazy how hard it is to realize that realize number one what you want and that you’re allowed to do it To me what’s so fun about bike packing is the idea of exploring and seeing the space between the big cities then also like getting to cool cities and playing around on the bike This is the first time that I got further away from the Danube for a moment and the trail went into some forest and then into some farmland And then once you get to a city exploring and having time to go down alleyways and check out the vibe of the place having really awesome coffees and good food and a beer at the end of the night Like that is what bike packing is about You would just bike through this kind of like farmland area and all of a sudden there would be like a cute little shed that had apple cider This says honor system apple juice alcohol-free and regular M nice Well done Johannes berry and 90% apple juice made on this farm Pretty special I don’t You know it’s just cool to pass through neighborhood areas and rural areas and kind of get the vibe just to kind of like swing past people’s lives and be like “Oh my gosh someone’s life feels like this a little bit.” Although who knows what’s going on in their head We We can’t know Protecting myself from the sun Nice little apple juice stop there And then you’d bike a little further and there’d be another stand that was catering to cyclists that was a little bit more touristy gave you directions and food and coffee Today was the first time where I started to see an area just getting into lints that felt a little bit more urban There’s little strawberry things protein Powerade Feel like I’m not getting enough protein Feel like this is what bike packing in my mind is all about It’s having little bags of fun food that you can get at Holy cow This is what I imagine like Japanese kids are eating all the time It’s just like fun squishy candies Like there was a version of a Home Depot I passed Not necessarily the aesthetic I’m searching for on this trip with areas that like really like resonate with me but also cool to see like oh this is also part of this trail along the Danube River
Oh man Oh such a nice cold breeze coming off this water Right back before you go into Lintz you get this more rolling hills and just kind of be beautiful nature right before you hit the city I ended up kind of crashing on a bench 40-ish miles in right before I hit Lintz and I literally just had an epiphany of like oh I can make this trip exactly what I want this trip to be I’m thinking about replanning my travels I’m like 14 milesi from where I was going to go to camp but nobody ever answered emails or phone calls over there So I don’t know if I want to like push get there Feel busy I’m tired of feeling busy Honestly that’s really what it is So maybe I’ll just camp here The plan was to go another 15 miles or so to the next campsite and then go to Passau and then from Passau I’d be in Germany and spend the next two days in Germany And I heard that from Pass out to Reagansburg Germany where I was planning to go was not really pretty I also could take the train from Passau and then go to my Airbnb that I’m already paying for in Bombberg I feel like I just had an epiphany and take like two slow days to get to Paso That would be fun I just feel so busy Like I want to enjoy these cities That’s part of this trip I would like to just hang out for a few hours I I feel like the morning is like two hours of camp tear down with like cleaning things and trying to make little plans Hopping on the bike Probably need to stop at a grocery store stop at restaurants and then biking biking biking Little bit of enjoyment of city for like 45 minutes to an hour and then show up at the campsite Set stuff up for an hour start trying to charge batteries and all that stuff and then rinse and repeat Okay Yeah I might have fun just biking to pass out splitting up the next couple days into like short days The idea was just like it just like dawned on me like an epiphany Oh I can stop here in Linds and I can enjoy Linds and explore it on a bike and go to bakeries and tonight go get schnitles of beer which I did like that to me like all of a sudden being aware that I could do that felt like a weight off my shoulders and like was like oh yeah yeah yeah this is what I want this trip to Hello Today I’m going to give myself enough time to check out limbs Just like play around on a bike and have fun rather than have to get from here to here on a bike which is a different mindset I’ll probably end up going 10 miles down the road at minimum that bird want to attack me cuz there’s two camping sites on there They just have never answered their phone or emails But it seems like most places I’ve showed up to they’ve been like “Oh yeah you could stay here.” So I’m going to enjoy the day Carpadium Carpadium All right No Google at the moment I’m just going to bike around and take a peek at the city Biked into Lint explored the oldtown area which is so charming to me as an American being in Europe is like “Hey here’s this cool oldtown area.” I went to the oldest bakery in Lint Kai Did the classic German thing which is like some bread and some cold cuts for breakfast coffee and then went inside and just hung out Did some work on my computer which actually felt nice Had an apple another coffee Went over to the grocery store for the first time Let myself get enough food for the night so I didn’t have to be nervous if I’d catch a restaurant Of course dropped a beer Guess you shouldn’t balance your beard on your bike And then biked out of the city past all these suckers sitting in traffic It’s about a 14 mile ride Oh that’s fun Lots of little like fairy crossings I’d be reluctant to get the timing right to rely on these Also seems like they like to close things willy-nilly whenever they want Nice beautiful ride along the river All right so this is the campsite It’s like 14 miles away from Linds Playing around on the bike today I’ll probably get 20 miles Just a nice little off day with like low stress This also make tomorrow easier to go to pass out Saw this I guess it’s like slom like skiing water skiing course that pulls you on a cable Felt very Austrian Set up my campsite If you’re wondering that took Oh only 11 minutes I thought it was going to take 23 minutes Haha was super tickled to see what an Austrian camping mobile campsite looked like Went over to this bar that was part of a golf course huring bar Ordered myself an entire pizza Pizza’s really good Nice Just like little amount of spice and kick with those peppers Almost had like a little jardinire vibe which feel like it’s catching out of the pizza world right now Took my giant stainless steel water bottle got a liter of beer to go Being able to go get a beer on tap in a bottle and then bike back to your camping spot and just chill August hell beer So good And then headed back to the
tent and just hung out in the tent drank some beer and it was so lovely Yeah I got the tent and I was just like you know what scrap Reagan’sburg People said it was ugly I’ve got this Airbnb in my favorite city in the world Bombberg which I’m already paying for Let’s go to pass out Pass out tomorrow and enjoy the ride and catch a train super late and get into Bombberg super late Honestly the next leg of the trip was the best leg of the trip as far as the most stunning and beautiful And then Bombberg is just the best It’s like 64 or so small micro breweries in the greater Bombberg area and just cobblestone streets So charming awesome bakeries I’ll make this trip into a three-parter and do the last day which is going to pass out Unbelievably gorgeous And then uh share some videos going to all those breweries in Bombberg which is completely wonderful So if you want to see those please feel free to follow along And thanks to everybody who likes and subscribes and comments It’s a nice encouragement to me as someone who’s creating something and uh it helps the videos get traction with the algorithm So thank you so much I do have to make a choice too When I leave Bombberg I have the option to take the train down to Munich or bike 3 days through Barbaria which sounds cool There’s just no specific bike path I’m trying to decide if that’s something I want to tackle I just don’t want to have to like get led onto the Autobond So if I do that trip I’ll definitely post that as well Thanks everybody Damn I was about to say something but these girls just got really riled up Okay

  1. I love that you verbalized that it's ok too change your mind about your plans. It's your trip…you decide how it goes. 👊🏾 Sorry about the spilled beer. It may not be the worst thing…buuuut. 🤦🏾‍♂️😁

  2. I fully support deviating from the plan! In my experience, the best travel memories are made when you have spontaneous moments and just follow your nose, follow your instincts, follow your bliss. So happy for you! Hey, have you ever thought about filming long periods of your biking, and then showing it to us at high speed? I’d love to live vicariously through you and see more of what you see. X O

  3. For slightly different reasons, I had the same epiphany two weeks ago on the Alpe Adria. It was hot, the last 22km was going to be uphill. Yesterday had been long. Tomorrow was a 100km day I wanted to enjoy. And then it dawned on me that this is SUPPOSED TO BE FUN not a challenge. So I got a nice, late lunch in Villach while waiting for the train to take me to Taravisio. 100% glad I did. I stopped stressing on that day and was feeling good the next day for the glorious run 50km all down from Tarvisio 🙂

This also reminded me that one of the beauties of riding in Europe is that public transit is so good and readily available that you can layer it in ad hoc to make the trip what you want.
