Today I installed my new Mastodon Comp EXT 100mm and a set of the BikesDirect 29×3 fatbike wheels. Though I’ve only been around the neighborhood and up and down a couple curbs I feel like I can monster truck over everything!
I thought I got a great deal on the Mastodon in July at $375 and the Gen 2 is on sale now for $325 direct from Hayes (since the Gen 3 is out now).
The wheels are on pretty basic Novatec hubs but they seem sound. The Duroc 40 rims look and feel high quality. Will try tubeless eventually. Left about an extra 30 mm on the steerer tube for now. It was my first time cutting a steerer tube or installing a star nut, but I took my time and it went smoothly.
The only other upgrade to date is a SRAM Level front brake; rear to follow once I get my act together and get a bleed kit.
Michigan is now guaranteed snow shortly since I took off the fat wheels! You’re welcome!

I have a similar setup on my Wo, also added bigger brakes and it’s a blast now
