In tales told around around the repair stand late at night I’ve heard it said that linear pull V brake levers have the same pull ratio that you can use them on mechanical disc brakes.

I want to jazz up a 2002 giant Rainier that has a 3 x 9 drivetrain with these combination, XT brake and shifters.

In a rational bicycle universe, they should work just fine with the avid BB 7 brakes in the Deore rear and the LX front derailleurs.

Right?

    Should be fine, as long as the BB7 are mtb. The road ones are more akin to cantilever brake lever pull. In reality none of these brake cable pull rules are set in stone, it depends a bit on your preferences for power/sponginess feeling/readiness to adjust a bit more frequently etc. But what you’re trying is said to be legit.

    Check which BB7 model you have. The most common linear/long pull calipers:

    * BB7 MTB (usually black)
    * TRP Spyke
    * Shimano BR-M375
    * Tektro MD-M300
    * Promax Render (black)

    There are lot of hybrid-mechanical-hydro calipers listed on aliex that claim to be linear/long pull but I’ve found that to not be true.

    That remains my favorite XT group – looked great, absolutely rock solid, even the Octalink crank was good.

    It would make sense as V brakes were the most common mountain bike brake style when disk brakes took off.
