Hey, everyone, I have a Peugeot frame that I’m uncertain of the year or model, but I’ve narrowed it to ~1977 and it could be either a PX- or PY-10. The previous owner was decal obsessed and also did something they shouldn’t have – they put a Campy seat post that was a larger diameter than the tube was designed for and also neglected maintenance of his chain. The fork is an addition too. It has Shimano dropouts, but I’ve been unable to find out much more about it. Any thoughts?

I love the gold hardware against the red, but I also wonder if red is the original color… Should I keep the paint intact or repaint it? I believe the seat tube damage is repairable right? I will have to source a new chain ring set unfortunately and gold Suntour or Simplex cranksets are spent! Any ideas on which routes to go with this? I want to get a 700c wheel set, but keep most other parts period-correct.

  1. You might have to drill a hole ahead of the crack in the seat tube to try to keep that crack from propagating.

Do not repaint the frame. Put your effort into finding a good paint color match and touching-up the existing paint.

Such a shame about the crack in the seat tube.

Maybe can be fixed but I’d call it a lost cause and strip the parts. Looks like a very nice frame though.

Maybe can be repaired though. I have no expertise in that area.

    Good luck with the restore!

French bikes of this era are usually built using French Standard dimensions, so a surprising number of components (stems, seatposts, front and sometimes even rear derailleurs, downtube shifters, cable clamps, pedals, BB’s, etc ) will not fit unless made for French bikes. Here’s a list of all unique French component and part dimensions:

  4. That is original paint. Reynolds sticker shows it’s age. I agree touching it up or just a clean up is preferable to starting over. That chrome will look brand new if you give it a stiff scrub with a rag and some degreaser, super fine steel wool if you have to.

The cranks look great. Sourcing correct derailleurs would not be that hard or expensive if you want to stay French but putting some basic shimano derailleurs into friction mode will probably function better. Mafac Racer brakes.

On the fork if it were me I would seek out a later model year PY fork which are full chrome so you don’t have to worry about color match and to preserve the Peugeot panache. This is not sound financial advice but it’s what I would do.
