We explore trails between Fingringhoe, Rowhedge and Colchester following the Roman River and River Colne.
Say hello to the camera
Hello to the camera Thanks for joining us on our first
run on Sam and Chris adventures This is the one where we
start learning lessons about videography and editing. See if you can spot them. Our 90 minute run today starts at Fingringhoe
playing field, that’s Fingringhoe in Essex. And we dip down quite steeply into the
Roman River valley. I’ll let Sam introduce herself and something about the run and she can
also introduce us to a little friend we met. Hello. Sam is running. Steady pace probably about 7 or 8/km or something, haven’t looked properly for a while. One of the beauties of running where we are in the countryside and rural bits is
that you see beautiful creatures of nature. That’s a moth my mum said, but I can’t remember which one. Beautiful. How are you doing darling? Oh well yeah we’re 50 minutes in to yeah 53 minutes into a 90 minute run all the way up to Colchester at the Hythe. We’re keeping it really easy today. But feeling good! It’s got hot. Started with my long sleeves – do wish I hadn’t in a way but the breeze is a bit chilly. Not as chilly as it was when I started out. Some more picturesque bits in a minute. Need to keep looking where I’m going so I don’t fall flat on me face. Should have put my straws on. Well done you’re having a drink. Over there, that’s Wivenhoe. And then, this here, where we’re
about to run into, that is Rowhedge. Lovely. We follow the Roman River into Rowhedge and its confluence with the
River Colne. We run past two pubs in Rowhedge: the Albion and the Anchor before passing
the moorings and heading towards Colchester. and it hasn’t been used commercially since 2005. It’s now home to numerous houseboats and overlooked by university accommodation. But we didn’t get quite that far on this run. Rowhedge is best known for its regatta. And the watch tower from which we took some of the footage here, was built quite recently in 2018. The River Colne was used ever since
Roman times for trade in Colchester. Now the river is significantly silted up On the home stretch now. We retraced our steps back along the Roman River and tackled the two steep climbs back up into Fingringhoe. Past Fingringhoe parish church, St Andrews, that’s an old church it dates from 1100AD. And right next door is the primary school, which is a rather more recent addition. And we had a little challenge for the final ascent up Furneaux Lane who could get back to the car first. Gotta beat hubby back to the car otherwise he’s cooking dinner. Yes! I’m cooking.
