Some time ago I damaged my rim, fully confident in my ability to rebuild a wheel, I got send a replacement rim.
After a few hours of trial and error I’m aware it’s not that easy after al. I have a really hard time centering the hub in the wheel.
(note: both the rim and spokes are carbon)

Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to center the hub without a wheel truing stand.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
(the missing spokes are yet to be put in, I had enough after another failed attempt)

  1. It’s as much art as science matched with experience.

You picked the absolute worst set up to learn on.

I would get it laced but still loose and have a LBS tension and true it

  2. Front fork makes a truing stand. Get it all laced very slack and bring things into shape slowly.

  3. I bought a stand, a tensiometer and the centering gauge. Even with the tools you need considerable perseverance.

could you even measure spoketension the traditional way?
