Day one of my first proper bikepacking trip around Norfolk on Cycling UK’s Rebellion Way. Beginning in a very wet Norwich the route, along quiet roads, byways and tracks, passed through Diss and Thetford before I reached my campsite at Everett’s Farm. The total mileage for the day was 67.

[Music] i’m in Liverpool Street Station it’s about 6:00 in the morning and I’m off to Norwich in an hour’s time on the train uh where I’m going to be cycling the Rebellion Way 230 mi around Norfolk it’s going to take me 4 days and I’m going to be camping on the bike the weather forecast is very poor rain rain rain and mostly a lot of rain so um all wrapped up prepared for quite a damp experiment um yeah we’re looking forward to it it’s a holiday must remember that it’s a holiday um yeah looking forward to getting the train getting sorted out getting out of Norwich and onto these country roads and lanes and seeing a bit of the countryside and getting some fresh air um yeah spending 4 days in the open air it’s going to be good fun looking forward to it see you later well I’ve made it to Norwich here it is and it is as wet as it was forecasted so I’ve got 67 miles to do today get to the campsite I’m staying at tonight i’m going by D and Bford there’ll be forest trails there’ll be all sorts of things hopefully the rain will stay down all day but if it does I think I’m prepared for it bikes already let’s see what this brings uh part one day one of the Rebellion Way first significant site today this is a Roman tower out there really can’t see it from the ground but from the air apparently it’s clear uh earliest records of this place were the 3rd century AD that’s what it looks like from the air and extruded slightly so this was a town that the Romans developed to show the local tribes how it’s done how civilization works and this was in the aftermath of the rebellion that this route is named after one of the rebellions and that’s Queen Buudaca in about 60 AD who rebelled against the Romans and marched on London destroyed burned London but met a a sad fate almost threw the Romans out of Britain or England but didn’t quite manage it so this is our first uh first set on the route not very far in already uh totally wet waterproof gear on today so yeah looks like we’re settling in for a day of dampness see you later oh yeah that was Wackton Common grazed for agricultural purposes no motorized vehicles or caravans just about passable on a bike with good tires obviously anyway at least it stopped raining h no bridge to walk across oh do I fancy get my feet wet decisions decisions oh dear and the little path through there and across the little bridge and that was the bridge safely across Buudaca Way so we’ve made it to this pac is very slow lots and lots of off-road between Norwich and this slowed me down quite a bit few rain showers but nothing too major need to get something to eat here and move on to Thatford this is Middle Harling Heath about 9 miles to Thatford so we’ve just come from down there and here we come got a choice here don’t go on the military firing range obviously and of course we’re going down this single track into the woods still about seven miles to go to my campsite but I’m making good time even on these very trying roads or paths really still it’s good fun it’s good fun and it’s been much drier than I thought it was going to be which is really good see you later [Applause] this is the memorial to the 75 vision the desert racks normally there’s a tank on top of this thing but it’s um it’s up for refurbishment currently returning in the spring of 2024 no sign of it yet so this comes on a busy on a busy road one track comes out of the forest behind it uh the track then continues in that direction down the desert rat trail [Music] hey [Music] hey hey [Music] hey [Music] [Music] hey hey [Music]
