    Chain dropped, carbon damage.

      I am not a carbon expert, like everyone else who’s replied so far.

      It does appear like the damage got through the paint and clearcoat, and that you compromised maybe a layer or two of carbon. The strength of carbon fiber does rely on having all the layers intact.

      That said, it’s in a pretty beefy area. I have a feeling that you’re very likely to be fine for the weekend ride. Afterwards I would consult a CF repairer promptly if it were my bike.

      Carbon is surprisingly sturdy and the damage looks cosmetic and your group ride friends are probably right in that the damage has occurred in the ‘meaty’ areas of the frame and therefore not as damaging to the frame integrity if at all.

      You’ll get through the grand fondo race. If it was a bone-shaking mountain bike XC race then I would second guess myself. Once the race is over, have it checked out by a professional carbon repair person.

      Tell your wife /husband that the damage is catastrophic and requires you to get a new bike

      Everyone who’s owned a carbon fiber bike has done this. You can install a chain catcher/guide next time. Tis’ but a flesh wound

      If i threw away every carbon bike that got a dent like this from a chain drop i would have thrown away dozens. How many have i thrown away. None because this is nothing and not worth worrying about. You chipped the paint. Its fine. Keep riding.

      If it creaks or cracks in the future, then worry about it, but for now its fine.

      It’s a little worse than cosmetic, but personally I’d still ride it in a grandfondo. I’d then bring it to a qualified shop for an evaluation when I got home.
