Trying to buy my first road bike and have been watching a listing for a 2013 Defy 1. Particularly interested in it because the ad says it’s been listed for almost a year. Originally $600, knocked down to $500. I asked the seller if there was any flexibility and he gave $425. I countered with $350 and he said $400 is his lowest. Don’t think I’m gonna get much more movement there, but I’m fine with walking away without a bike. My thoughts were that $400 for a decent frame with 105 groupset is a pretty good deal for my area, it is a little old though. My biggest thing is holy moly is that cassette dirty. I’m not sure how big of a deal that is, I mean if I can just clean it off myself then no harm no foul, but maybe that’s indicative of other wear. Thoughts? I live in a cycling friendly big city and I’ve seen good listings sell in hours, seems odd this one’s been sitting for so long.

Eh, that’s just what your drivetrain looks like when you use wet lube and don’t completely clean it off every other ride. I’ve ridden an entry level Defy from this era and there’s a lot to like about it, nice and light and lively. Maybe worth checking the wheel bearings, think we had a few issues with the seals not being great. As ever, sizing is king.
