As part of our ride around the world we cycled through the poorest country on earth, Burundi 🇧🇮
We didn’t know what to expect from Burundi – It’s a country with a wretched history full of war and civil strife reaching right up until recent years – but we were greeted with happiness, warmth and (most of all!) curiosity throughout our time here. It’s one of the most densly populated countries in Africa and we were pretty much never alone – whenever we stopped large crowds formed around us in under a minute, watching on in curious amusement. It made finding somewhere to pee a bit of a mission at times!
As in other parts of Africa, China has poured money into Burundi in recent years and so the roads are surprisingly good – even if there’s no vehicles on them. It’s probably also the hilliest country we’ve cycled in since we rode in Colombia, but it’s also one of the most beautiful too so at least the hard work always comes with a reward

Those water bottle cages, in the final pic, holding 1.5 litre bottles. Where do you get those? Who makes them?
