The Symphony of Lightning by Zaho de Sagazan! Zaho de Sagazan! Zaho de Sagazan, once again! I like names that start with Z. Zaho de Sagazan! In 2024, last year, I went to a concert, quite by chance. A friend gave me his ticket and I went there without any particular expectations. Zaho de Sagazan entered the stage with her musicians. And when she started singing, when her musicians started tinkering with things on their machine, something clearly happened. There was an energy that was released and this energy, for me, was new. I understood that evening, her success which I imagined to be exaggerated. I understood why she unites so many people, why she touches so many people. Her lyrics are intelligent, about hypersensitivity, solitude, sadness. And all these emotions that she went through and that she still goes through today, she manages to channel them, to take them on and to transform them into music that overflows with energy at the crossroads of French song and Berlin electro. We are hearing more and more about Zaho de Sagazan. She became famous with her first album, La Symphonie des éclairs, released in 2023. She has won five music awards in the last two years, including Best Album. She participated in the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games, and then she toured the United States last December, with several concerts sold out. In short, there is clearly something going on around Zaho de Sagazan. How did a 23-year-old artist at the time manage to make a name for herself so quickly on the French and foreign scene? What’s her background? And what’s so special about her music that it’s so talked about? Today, I think you will have understood it well, we are going to talk about Zaho de Sagazan. – It is December 28, 1999, in the middle of a storm that is literally shaking France with falling trees, damaged electrical networks, and a horrible sky. In short, it’s a mess. And it is in this chaos that Zaho will be born. Zaho grew up in Saint-Nazaire with her three older sisters and her twin sister. She is already immersed in the artistic world since her father is a renowned sculptor and performer, and her mother is a teacher. At home, the girls have a lot of freedom, they have a lot of fun and move mattresses so they can jump on them and turn up the music. Their parents are super cool and always let them do whatever they want. Zaho also spends his time running and playing in certain neighborhoods of Saint-Nazaire. It’s a city she loves because she feels free there, she likes having the sea right next door, she likes the concrete, the cranes, the many places where it’s possible to hide. And if as an adult we know well that if Saint-Nazaire is concreted it is because during the Second World War it was destroyed in large part because of the bombings, Well, Zaho, who doesn’t yet make the connection, will later find many similarities with the city of Berlin, which will strengthen the affection she will have for this city. Zaho is very attracted to dance and does it intensively. But at the age of 13, the first change in her life will occur, which will be the beginning of a difficult period for her, Her sisters, older than her, gradually begin to leave the family cocoon. Yes, it’s complicated because she’s very close to her sisters, but that’s life and anyway she’s going to stay in very close contact with them. Really, that’s nothing compared to what awaits Zaho. She’ll be taken by surprise and will have to confront her greatest enemy for several years. It’s the beginning of adolescence, it’s a complicated period for most people, changes are taking place in our bodies, we want to assert ourselves even more. For Zaho it will be slightly different since almost overnight a storm will sneak up on her body. Not a storm that comes, hurts, and leaves, but a sudden, atrocious storm, full of electricity, that will settle in permanently at Zaho’s place without her really understanding why. Zaho will always want to explode, to scream, she will want to release all the emotions that overwhelm her, but there is no way, the only way that relieves her is to cry. She will become hypersensitive, she will gain weight, she will hate herself, she will lose self-confidence, she will stop dancing and she will gradually begin to take an interest in singing and playing the piano. She hums, she takes her first steps in music and frankly it’s already promising. For many years, she has been posting songs she plays, both original compositions and covers, on her Instagram account. The piano, we can say that it is the instrument that will save her from this complicated period since the melodies that she composes in front of her piano, the words that she writes, will little by little free her from this storm. She will learn to accept what she feels, she will have the courage to go and eat all the clouds and instead of rejecting this storm that she has learned to hate, on the contrary, she will accept it, she will use it like an old friend to create her songs. And she would repeat it many times later, but to be sensitive is to be alive. She would make her emotions her trademark, as the lyrics of her future songs would feature strong allusions to this period. At the exit of Aristide Briand high school, located just opposite the stadium and the famous Saint-Nazaire saucer, Zaho and his friends sit on the grass to play cards, listen to music, smoke, just be together. And besides, it was during this period that Zaho began to get closer to the stage, since with a high school collective called Les Irréductibles, she had the opportunity to meet musicians, to rehearse, and then to participate in concerts, and this for several years in a row. It was during one of these moments that she performed the song La Belle Étoile by M, at the Simone Veil theater. But once she has obtained her scientific baccalaureate, Zaho will leave Saint-Nazaire to go to Nantes, in order to begin a IUT in business and administration management. She already knew at that time that she wanted to be an artist and make music, and if she wanted to do this IUT, it was because she wanted to learn everything that surrounded the creation and management of a business, in order to know how to manage herself and be free in her profession. During her studies, Zaho, who always wanted to work in a hospital and care for people, became a home care assistant for a year, then more occasionally she also worked in a nursing home. This is a period that will mark her deeply, she will declare that she is paid a pittance, not earning money but humanity. It’s a profession where people often have dementia and are not even aware of what they are doing, where they rarely say thank you, but the strength of this profession is also the self-sacrifice that must be shown. She would later say that it was the best time of her life and that it was one of the most beautiful jobs in the world because it represented pure kindness and generosity. Many years later, in 2024, when she wins her music awards, she will pay tribute to all those whose job is to do good but who do not receive awards. Now, there are two triggers that will make Zaho the artist she is today. One day, while she was in her garden, one of her sisters put on a song, Another Love by Tom Odell. It’s a sublime song in which we perceive a great sensitivity and besides I recommend you to see its clip which is magnificent. Zaho, when she hears this song, she immediately falls in love with it. So, she will become interested in Tom Odell, she will be literally swept away by his world. And one day, she has the chance to go see him in concert. And this concert will be a real turning point for her. She sees him there, alone, at his piano, giving his all, singing his songs, expressing all his emotions. It gives Zaho an urge to scream, an urgency to create. It’s as if she can put herself in his shoes, as if she understands him. She also understands all of this, the emotions displayed there, on a piano, the music and its cathartic power. This concert had the effect of a bomb on Zaho, and almost overnight, there it was, she was going to be 100% focused on her piano, to continue writing songs, and like Tom Odell, to put his whole soul into them. The second trigger that will change Zaho’s destiny, and for many people, is a journey. And not super far either. When she was 17, Zaho and her friends went to Berlin for a few days to clear their heads and party. Zaho discovers an incredible city, with streets that give off specific atmospheres. Berlin is a very alternative city, and all this excitement, especially artistic, speaks to Zaho a lot. She discovered electro music, clubs, and all the energy that the city gave off. Two days before the end of the stay, the girls queue to enter Berghain, which is a famous club where many artists from diverse backgrounds play, but especially techno artists. Arriving at the entrance of the club, in front of the bouncer, some of Zaho’s friends are allowed inside, but Zaho, who looks a little young, is turned away. Luckily, she’s not the only one. There’s another friend of hers who also failed. So, clearly, they are separated from the rest of the group for the evening. So they don’t get discouraged, they decide to both go to another techno club, in which they will spend a great evening, since they will stay there all night. They will dance for 6 hours straight. And there, while they dance, Zaho is in a trance with the music that is playing, and she has a click. She thinks the music is really amazing. She makes him feel things, it’s truly a precious and unique moment. But according to her, there is something missing: words and a voice. They leave the club in the morning, and Zaho is convinced she’s going to do it. She will write her lyrics, she will put her voice to electronic music. From this moment on, Zaho entered a period during which she was completely focused on electronic music. She discovered many German artists, Modérat, Can, Meute. But above all, one day, her twin sister told her that if she liked German electro music, then she should be interested in Kraftwerk. And there, she falls from the clouds, she takes a huge slap. She finds their music original and experimental, creating a subtle blend of pop and electro. Zaho is fascinated by the fact that they use a structure that is uncommon in electronic music, namely verses and choruses. And for good reason, Kraftwerk are so innovative in their sounds, They will always try to be at the cutting edge of technology, They will make themed albums, for example, than artists like David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Rammstein or Blondie will say that Kraftwerk are clearly one of their influences. Zaho will work hard, whether it’s her music or her stage presence. She’s going to look at herself in a mirror and she’s going to work on her self-confidence. She continued to post her songs on Instagram and in 2021, the Nantes duo Mansfield-TYA discovered her tracks. They are seduced by her world and she suggests that Zaho open for them at the Trianon in Paris. Obviously, she accepts and it is with butterflies in her stomach that she goes to the concert. That evening, she was accompanied on stage by her high school friend Tom Geffray. The concert went really well and at the end the audience, made up of people like you and me, but also professionals, he begins to understand that Zaho de Sagazan has enormous potential. This date will be the first of a long series since very quickly, Zaho will be contacted to play at the Olympia where she will open for Hervé. She will also participate in various festivals such as the Printemps de Bourges, the Francopholis, the Nuits de Fourvière, Rock en Seine or even the Escales, a festival held in Saint-Nazaire. All these participations will contribute to strengthening Zaho’s reputation and will also allow it to reach a wider audience. Finally, Zaho was selected for a residency by the Les Trans Musicales festival in Rennes. where she will perform 5 nights in a row, performing who will come to confirm his artistic potential and also attract the attention of the media and music industry professionals. Regarding concerts, even if the singer does not yet have an album, Well, she’s been writing for a few years and then she tests her songs on stage. and one of the first ones she plays is called Sufficiently. This is normally the moment when I tell you that a well-known label called Virgin Records spotted Zaho and offered to work with her, They make the album, it comes out and bam, it’s a hit. After all, Zaho has talent, so her success was inevitable. But no. If you are used to watching my videos, You probably know that in the music industry we rarely do, if not ever, the path alone. We see the facade, but behind it there are always people there. And regarding Zaho, I have to tell you about Lucie Guilloux. Lucie is a girl who in 2014 went to the same high school as Zaho, she was 18, Zaho was 15, but she immediately saw enormous potential in Zaho. They became friends, a few years passed, Lucie has a master’s degree in marketing communication and a double degree in entrepreneurship and communication. You probably see this coming, Lucie who wants to help Zaho in her musical project, she will accompany him to Paris, They will both take the temperature of some people in the industry. to present Zaho’s artistic project to them, but they quickly realize that it’s going to be complicated. Some of the interested people only talk about money and not about music at all, and for those who talk about music, They already tell them that there will be certain things they will be allowed to do and others not to do. And they don’t appreciate that at all. Suddenly, the evidence will impose itself. Earlier, I told you that Zaho wanted to be the master of her project, She wanted to be completely free. Bah Lucie, who in the meantime has created her communications agency for artists and festivals, She is now completely comfortable with creating a box. And that, well, is rather good. They are both going to create their own label. This label that they will call Disparate, is a standard that tells everyone we know what we want, we want to be able to manage ourselves, we want to own our music, we want to be free in our artistic choices, to choose the cover of the next album, to choose the order of the songs, etc. Some people laugh at them, people in the industry tell them they are unconscious, that they don’t even know what they’re doing, that it’s definitely not going to work. And it’s true that even if they seem confident in appearance, Well, basically, it’s all still new. They will find people to join them, Zaho, she will focus more on the musical and promotional aspect on social networks, while Lucie, she will take on the role of Zaho’s manager, She will take care of all the administrative work, sending emails, organization, and at first it’s still okay. But the more time passes, the more the team will grow, the less Zaho and Lucie will sleep, they will work on weekends, they will have almost no rest. Clearly, running your own label is a lot, a lot, a lot of work. And if I told you about the Virgin Records label earlier, which belongs to Universal, It’s because the girls will decide to work with them, but only on the distribution part. And it’s a partnership that’s going to go very well since it will allow Zaho’s music, once the first album was released, to be distributed worldwide. So Virgin, yes, but most of the work is done internally by Zaho, Lucie and the entire Disparate label team. Now it’s 2022 and Zaho has been working hard on her music for almost 4 years, on her stage presence, on her self-confidence. And that’s it, she knows she has enough songs to be happy with. Okay, she’s ready. And more broadly, his entire team is ready to release the album, the first album by Zaho de Sagazan, a woman who was then completely unknown, or almost. This first album is seductive. There is already this very recognizable voice with its amplitude, its warmth and its masculine bass. And then something catchy, especially in the first pieces, which superimpose effective melodies on techno rhythms or electric pads. The phenomenon of the year 2024 is her, Zaho de Sagazan, who shines on stage, which radiates from the cover of fashion magazines. And that, for a singer, is the best proof of her popularity. A first album as hot as ice, capable of merging Barbara fans and Kraftwerk nerds alike. The album La Symphony des éclairs will be released on March 31, 2023 and that propels Zaho into the spotlight. The public is excited, the media is on their side too, despite the fact that it is independent. We find in this album beautiful poetic songs, well written, an atypical vocal grain, heady instrumentals, The themes covered range from desire, love, manipulation, sadness, courage… In short, Zaho has this gift of speaking to everyone with her texts, which are brilliantly set to music by Zaho herself, but also by Pierre Cheguillaume and Alexis Delongue, two friends of hers. Several songs will rise among the others, Sadness, Don’t look at yourself, I’m dreaming, Boys… But it must be said that the song on this album which will be played tirelessly on the radio, is much calmer, with the only electronic touch being a subtle autotune on Zaho’s voice. I am of course talking about the song that gave the album its title, La Symphonie des éclairs. It’s always beautiful above the clouds, But if I were a bird, I would go dancing in the storm… Zaho will tour a few dozen concerts in 2023, with a ladies and gentlemen’s appearance at the Olympia, and then obviously all the major festivals. At the end of the year, she announced on her networks that her album La Symphonie des éclairs has exceeded 50,000 sales, it is gold! And in April 2024, a year after releasing his album, The song Symphony of Lightning reaches 30 million streams on the internet. Zaho, she’s hallucinating, she doesn’t really understand what’s happening to her, but she keeps her feet on the ground, she remains very simple. She takes success as an opportunity, and that’s it. All she cares about is making music. And this is something that we can perceive during his speeches at the Victoire de la Musique, because yes, she was nominated in 5 different categories, and she will win 4 awards, best album of the year, original song, the stage revelation, and the female revelation. And you can see immediately when she speaks, what kind of person Zaho is. I was born very sensitive, as you can see, and for a long time I thought it was wrong to be sensitive, because it was lacking in my life, because it translated into tears, shouts, anger, in a lot of not very pleasant things, and one day I discovered music, and I realized that crying on my piano did me a world of good, it didn’t hurt anyone, and above all it made pretty songs, and I realized that what I thought was my biggest flaw in my life was ultimately to have greater quality. I would end this sentence with a sentence that I always end up saying at my concert, To be sensitive is to be alive, and we are never too alive, To all the little storms listening to me, well done for being you! She will make her first Zenith in March 2024, with another rising star of French song as the opening act, I named Solann. And I insist on the fact that if you like Zaho’s music, You absolutely have to see her live, it’s on stage that you see her full potential, and that we can experience his music, it’s a real show that I highly recommend. Overall, 2024 will be the year of consecration for Zaho, between the awards received, the very dense tour where she will be on all fronts with more than 150 dates, we will be able to see her touring the Zeniths, we will see her play in the United Kingdom, in Belgium, in Luxembourg, in Germany, in Canada, and in the United States with a date in Los Angeles, one in San Francisco, and three concerts given in New York, two of which will be sold out. There is obviously another major event she will be attending in the summer, and which will undoubtedly contribute to its reputation abroad, the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics. Zaho will be at the Tuileries Garden, and she will sing a cappella, accompanied only by a choir, the song Under the Sky of Paris, popularized by Edith Piaf. The result is striking, and many people discover it at this time. Under the Parisian sky lovers walk, their honor is built on an air made for them. Finally, there is another event I wanted to tell you about, which has received less media attention. Zaho has a cousin who is sick and has been fighting cystic fibrosis for years. He puts all his time and energy into bringing people together, cycling for miles, He even wrote a book, all to raise public awareness about this disease, which is genetic, and which is also attacking its own children. Zaho, she is very sensitive to this, and she decided to become a sponsor of an association, which is called Overcoming Cystic Fibrosis, and which helps people suffering from this disease, but also who does research to overcome it. Zaho provides support, visibility too, and then one day, while she has a concert scheduled in Marseille, she decides to stop at the Timone hospital, which contains two buildings, a building for children, and a building for adults. And she will play the symphony of lightning, for the volunteers, for the caregivers, and of course for children with this disease. – This is why Zaho de Sagazan became a hit with her only album, overnight. And as usual, there is no magic formula, there is no single reason, but rather a mixture of many different factors. Zaho started young, she had good conditions to flourish artistically at school, She worked hard for several years, so that she was finally satisfied with her art, she was very well supported to create and run her own label, she was favored by the media, she was able to create lively concerts with her team, breathtaking and immersive. He is a sincere and human person with whom many people can identify. She knows where she comes from, she has always seen her father flourish in his art, but never make any money. She was a free child, and this freedom, which she wants to preserve at all costs, it carries her every day. And then, his music is innovative and his lyrics are extremely beautiful. By the time she received her four music awards, There were some people in the audience. Frédéric Petit, his former CPE at Aristide-Briand high school and now president of the Les Escales festival in Saint-Nazaire, He always supported Zhao, and he still remembers that when she was in high school, She was flamboyant, she already had something going for her at the age of 15. The Irreductibles, the collective in which she began playing, still follow her today since they were there that night when she destroyed everything. Zhao from Sagazan, that’s all, he’s a personality, he’s a bunch of people around, It’s a whole world in fact. And the cool thing about this story is that it’s just the beginning. In 2025, she had another music victory, She is also scheduled to go on a symphony tour with violins and ondes marteneaux, one of the oldest electronic musical instruments. And then in September, she will do 10 Olympias in a row. Zhao, it is a promise made to French song, who makes it evolve, who makes it move, and which brings with it a whole new generation of talented artists who are still only at the beginning of their careers, but which are already making a lot of noise. Thank you very much for watching this video, I hope you enjoyed it and that you learned some things.
Merci ❤
Merci !
super vidéo!
Encore une masterclass pour la belle chronique. Merci beaucoup
