My 2025 Trek Checkpoint has a SRAM 1×12 drivetrain.
I am upgrading to 13 speed cassette and new Red crank/chainring in the front. I’m debating staying with the 40T chainring versus going to 42T chainring.
You can see my data from 3 different rides pictured. (They range between 22 and 28 miles).
I feel like I barely use the easiest gear so I ordered a 42T chainring. Based on this data do you agree that the 42T makes sense over the 40T? I’m in Charlotte. Moderate hilliness. Thanks!

  1. If you want to move up one cog to the 17 you do the math (40/15)*17 = 45.3, so you need at least a 45 to move up a cog. A 42 won’t do much
