My dad is a bit of a hoarder and has collected a large number of cassettes over the years, a mix of 7, 8 and 9 speed. I'm trying to sort through these and put the large and small cogs together.
- how sensitive are the cassettes when it comes to the small 11 cogs and lockrings, is it okay if they get mixed up between cassettes?
- is there any way to tell for sure that a cog belongs on a specific cassette?

Many of the rings will have stamps, they may require cleaning to see. Try to match those up. People will tell you they need to be matched perfectly, but a few swaps (even in the bigger rings) will go fine so long as the wear is similar across the whole cassette. There may be some that are incompatible with a traditional freehub (threaded, wide-spline) which will be easy to match up.
Please note that the smallest cogs are often part of the locking mechanism for the cassette, and that spacers are typically necessary between cogs.
Good luck!
