Went to give the ol' trusty steed some TLC this afternoon and noticed that the big chainring is smiling like a hockey player (missing a tooth).

This much-abused 3×9 drive train has been rolling strong since 2011 in adverse conditions (chains replaced as they wore out, but none of the cogs).

Needless to say I'll have to replace the chainring, but I figured I'd consult the hivemind on the relative merits of converting to a 1x drive train. For reference, the bike is a 2011 Rockhopper 29er Pro, and I regularly ride hills steep enough for the granny gear.

If nothing else, I felt the need to share my grief over this slim piece of metal that has faithfully accompanied me on commutes and adventures for more than a decade.

  1. I do like 1x. It’s really a function of what gear range you need. What’s the cassette range?
