Taking this bike for a test ride tomorrow. Would be using it as a city/commuter bike. Currently listed for $100 CAD in good working condition. Curious if this is a good deal, and if anybody here has any information on this particular model, which appears to be from the mid /late 80s.

For reference, I found this current refurbished listing online for $625 CAD: https://www.retro-rides.ca/products/norco-alpine-city-bike-18-medium

I’d ignore that listing for $625. No way is someone paying that. The bike is old and almost everything is made of steel. I do see forged drop outs though. Sign of at least not the cheapest frame. None of the components are valuable or interesting. $100 is too much in my opinion. Closer to $50. I’d buy it for $30 max just for the handlebar and would donate the rest to a bike co-op.

  2. $100 CAD is $73 USD. That isn’t The Deal of the Century, but it is a decent deal if that bike is in 100% condition.

  3. I’d do it… Norco had decent stuff and that bike looks pretty good for tooling around as is or upgrading and smashing around.

  4. Just an okay deal. Fun bike, but for a commuter I’d spend more and get something with better rims/brakes. Or be ready to upgrade. Will probably at least need new tires and brake pads. Depends on how much you’re commuting and the weather you do it in but in wet conditions that won’t stop well as it is.

  5. Perfectly decent commuter bike, doesn’t look abused. Still has the dork discs on the chainrings and the rear hub, and the paint’s good. Steel rims, and those won’t be high-end parts, but they’ll be perfectly serviceable.

I don’t see a label on it, but this is the kind of bike you’d buy from a mom-and-pop Canadian bike shop in the 80s or 90s. Not a high-end lightweight, but light years ahead of a department store bike or a Canadian Tire bike.
