Currently running the SRAM Guide RS with metal pads and Centerline 200 rotors. It’s not fantastic but “doing their job” you know. Decided to upgrade em and get something used under the 150-180$ price tag. I always wanted something from Hope, have ridden the Tech3V4 brakes and insanely loved it, but it’s quite expensive here even used. Recently saw the Tech Evo m4 for about 160$ per set (same price as used Code RSC), but never ridden this one specifically so I got a question:
1) do the Tech Evo M4 performance any good compared to SRAM 4-piston RS and higher models?
2) should I tickle my “inner brand label addiction” and switch from Guide RS to Tech Evo M4 or this might be a dumb move?

  1. I’d go with the model with the newer master cylinder if I wanted Hope brakes.

Probably not. How much better can you actually stop? Do your wheels lock up currently? How is a brake that also locks up your wheel gonna be better? That’s my opinion on brakes personally. I have some sram level brakes, and I tap the lever and the wheels lock. How much better could you get? Ya know. Idk that may just be me.

  3. Still running the same model and they work perfectly. However the hope brakes are not for everyone. The lever feel is completely different.

I stay away from mineral oil when I can. I only have two bikes out of a fleet of 13 between my son and I that have SRAM.

Used brakes may need not only bleeding, but service and seals replacement. That’s kind of pricey, even if you do it yourself. So take it into consideration. Which brake pads do you use? Maybe you should try different pads – metallic, or cooma ceramic(pink one from AliExpress), and bleed them? Because “they do their job” is strange to read about guides.. it has enough power to block 2.6 tires.. Codes are absolute beast, so if you just want something new go for it. But chek em first, it could be absolutely abused by previous owner.
Old versions of hope brakes has alot of modulation, and not so much power..And a ton of trouble..

  6. I am currently riding a set of 2009 Hope M4 brakes. They’re definitely worth it if you get them for a good price. You can easily service them and Hope is more than happy to sell you spares.

I am 120kgs and these brakes have never failed me.

I’ve not run this generation but my tech 4 v4 brakes are the best brakes I’ve ever used. Normally id say avoid old brakes but hope has incredible service support and you can essentially always find rebuild kits. It’s not something your going to buy for a season or two but something you’ll take from bike to bike to bike as you upgrade frames but not brakes.

The bleed is annoying and messy but simple and you basically do it once and that’s it so I don’t mind it.

I’ve had poor experiences with sram brakes so I don’t love them. Shimano is great and reliable but sometimes feels like they lack the umph to slow my large mass down. The new xtr brakes are a huge upgrade so that should be an option (rumor is xt group ought to be released soon too).

That said if you like the unique hope feel and strictly with reliability and product support I would have no qualms about getting these
