Q: How do you land? A: We steer by moving our weight under the glider. To land, we fly out of the rising air, then glide gently down to the ground. Gravity is always pulling the glider down, so it’s easier to land than it is to stay up. If you’re curious, many of my other videos show landings!
Q: Won’t the wind push you over the water? A: The wind is blowing from the ocean so it’s pushing us away from it. Even if the wind died, we can’t get to the ocean from this low hill. At other sites where we do fly over the ocean (not here), we do everything possible to avoid landing in the water, and carry a knife to cut free of the glider if necessary.
Q: Don’t you need a parachute? A: We always carry a parachute when flying in the mountains/at high altitude. Here on the dunes, we’re flying too low for a parachute to be effective. All of that said, most hang glider pilots never need to use their parachute.
Q: What happens if the wind switches or a big gust hits? A: We can still control the glider in gusts. If the wind is too strong or switches, we can land.
Q: What happens if the wind dies? A: Nothing; the glider just glides down to the ground and we land.
Q: Can I try it? A: Yes, 100%! But please don’t try on your own as it’s very dangerous to teach yourself. Find a school/instructor online for a lesson, and have fun!
Q: Can you tell me how to build a glider? A: No. We only buy certified hang gliders from professional manufacturers. It’s very dangerous to try to design, build, and fly your own. You can buy a well-used but still flyable hang glider for under $1k USD. Please take lessons before trying to fly one.
This is an extremely difficult and dangerous sport. Whenever something looks easy it's one of the hardest things to do. That being said it must feel wonderful!!
