My uncle gave me this old Cannondale that he had in storage. I'd like to get some work done on it to use it for riding around the city and fitness rides – would that even work? I'll take it to my local shop, but I'd like to have some idea for what I want before I take it in.
Any suggestions for where to start a rehab?

Have them take a look at any soft parts if its been sitting – tires and brake pads.
Otherwise that appears to be in fantastic condition, and should be a perfect fitness bike!
I would start by not clamping it by the frame; instead clamp it by the seatpost. Lots of folks will tell you its okay and that they have done it, but I wouldn’t.
Depends on how it rides. I would start with replacing the saddle. It looks super uncomfortable and you’ll want to break one in to feel good for you.
Look over the frame and components to look for damage or breaks. Clean and lube the chain, pull each brake lever with both hands to make sure they’ll hold, make sure the wheel releases aren’t loose, and spin it around the neighborhood. If nothing is broken or noisy, you’re good to go for a bit.
If you can spend a little money, get a fit check, and get all cables and housing replaced.
You can do a ton of simple work from YouTube videos and the like.
That’s a great frame and I used to have those wheels. If things are in good shape that’s a great gift to receive.
Replace seat first.
I would do full maintenance. Take everything apart. Clean, and lube. Depending on how rusty things are, I would change the Chain and cassette, and maybe the braking and shifting cables. Maybe new brake pads. See if the Wheels are running true. Bar end caps… thats all I can think of right now.
It’s a great bike. To get this as a gift is awesome. Good Uncle 🙂
