Hey, not sure what the right term is. I had “play” side to side on both front and back wheels. I saw a tutorial and tightened the front axle and it fixed the front wheel perfectly. So I went on to try to do the same on the back but it’s completely different, every tutorial I see on YouTube is different from my bike and I don’t know what to look for.
Any help on what name I should google for this specific problem?
I don’t know if I have to change the bearings instead.
The bike is from around 2013 and I think the shifter/cassete are shimano tourney is that helps
Thanks

Your axle is broken into two pieces, and is only kept together by the QR skewer and pressure from the dropouts. You need a new hollow axle / probably whole hub.

  2. What you have in your hand is part of the axle with cone, spacer and locknut attached, Your axle has broken and you need to either replace it or buy a new wheel. If you can do the work yourself just buy a new axle but if you can’t it will probably be cheaper to buy a new wheel than to pay a shop to replace the axle.

  3. Your axel is broken. The threaded bit that you are holding is supposed to span the length of the hub. That and you need to remove the freewheel to properly adjust the rear hub. It’s bike shop time, if only to help you get the right tools and replacement axel.

    Edit* spelling

  4. Wow looks like it was obvious 🤣 Thanks for the fast replies everyone, if anyone has any idea what axle I have to buy or how to find out I’d love the help, otherwise I’ll take it to a bike shop

  5. 😬😬😬 pretty sure that axle is broken. You shouldn’t have a piece of the axle with the cone and lock nut still on it.

    1. I would contact a LbS. This is going to be a full replacement of the rear axel and possibly cones.

    If you are feeling adventurous.

    Remove freehub
    Remove bearings
Remove axle from non drive side piece of the axle
    Remove non drive side bearings
Inspect drive side and non drive side cup and cone races
    Inspect bearings

    Axle length needs measured
    Axle width needs measured
    Order new axle/cone/locknuts

If cup races are damaged… buy new wheel
