I think she just turned too hard but looks like the front wheel locked up and she almost went over the bars? She has been riding for 3 days and im so proud of her progress but this was almost a big setback!

Also sorry for posting here the biking subs don’t allow videos anymore apparently?

  1. she leaned too far and the pedal touched the ground. Solution would be to perhaps not pedal while cornering or not lean as far.

  2. That was a pedal strike on the drive side. Yes she almost wiped out but nice recovery on her part. She should learn not to pedal on tight turns to avoid that and also to keep the inside pedal “up” when turning.

Edit: rewatching the video it looks like her crank arms are wayyy to long for that bike, or maybe it’s kids bikes in general, but watch her pedals as she goes by. They are always like an inch off the ground at the lowest point. That’s a recipe for disaster.

She struck a pedal while leaned over in the turn. Teach her to coast with pedals level when turning.

  4. Looks like the back wheel went over something and kicked out.

    Good recovery though πŸ‘

Grownups also almost wipe out due to pedal strikes too. Ask me how I know.

  6. Ride height device activated in the middle of the corner, but she saved it like Marquez

  7. Teach her to not pedal while cornering and to raise the pedal on the side she turns to up..Or at least keep the pedals level.

  8. Does the bike have a coaster brake? That’s where the brakes engage if you pedal backwards. It looks to me like her left foot came off the pedal and the back wheel locked up. I can’t tell, her foot could have also slipped off and gotten pinned by the pedal. Since the bike has hand brakes, you might want to invest in a freewheel if it doesn’t have one already.

Like everyone else said, pedal strike. You’ll see the wear on it if you were to look.

I think we can Occam’s razor our way out of this one: its because she’s 5yo and has 3 days of experience riding lol.

Mechanically though, what happened is she leaned too far over while pedaling, and the pedal struck the ground. The result, was that the rear wheel lifted off the ground, and swung to the left of the bike (because we are dealing with a right side pedal strike). Essentially, ‘bucking’ here.

This is something that will completely go away with experience. All riders deal with this while learning, and in the MTB or fixed gear riding world, its kind of a problem that never goes away, its something you need to stay conscious of. Its what we call ‘pedal strike’ and it is bad. But, easy to avoid with experience.

She’s doing great, and this was a learning experience. I’m sure here muscles/body remembered what and why this happened, and she’ll repeat this mistake less and less as she rides more.

Proud moment for you bike dad! Good to see them starting early!

Turned too sharp while pedaling, and the pedal hit the ground. Solution: stop pedaling when turning
