Hi, I’m Hirschi, and I’d like to welcome you
to the Semmering playground. Hello and welcome to a new episode of Bike Destinations. Today, we’re in Austria, just about an hour from Vienna, exploring the Semmering Bike Park and its claimed 18 kilometers of trails. Bikepark has a well-equipped base at the bottom of the hill. There is a shop, bike rental, bike wash, bike school, service stand, free parking where you can stay overnight, and a few restaurants. We had lunch at the top station of the cable car in the restaurant Liechtensteinhaus which we can recommend, they have delicious burgers. Let’s look at the riding. The elevation gain here is approximately 320 meters. There are multiple trails to choose from, with many sharing sections. Starting with the easiest, a skill zone in the valley is designed for beginners and children. Additionally, three blue flow trails on the hill feature safe berms and rollers. Some parts are shared with the trike route or have transfers on the gravel roads. The red trails are slightly steeper and faster. Most of them are flow trails with tabletop or gap jumps and big berms. Bunny way is a short but very fun natural trail with technical and wooden features. North Shore Line is great for practicing balance, as its narrow features are relatively low to the ground, making them quite safe. The slopestyle park features obstacles of various sizes, such as tabletop jumps, drops, transfers, and wallrides. A training airbag jump is also available at the bottom of the hill. There’s also one cool black downhill trail. It is a technical challenge with many rocks and roots, where you can train well for races. A few days before our visit, the trails were significantly affected by extensive long-lasting storms, which is worth noting. While it may take time to find the flow, the trails become more enjoyable with each ride. We think the trails are best suited for intermediate riders, as beginners and pros—particularly jump enthusiasts—might find the variety somewhat limited. On the bright side, the downhill track is a standout feature that advanced riders will surely enjoy. There’s plenty to do off the bike as well. For families, there’s a playground for children, a tower jump, and a rope park. The area also offers hiking trails and a railway museum in the center of Semmering. Our favorite activity, however, was the Mountain carts—they’re surprisingly fun, especially when drifting in corners! The bike park is usually open from the middle of May to the beginning of November, For up to date information follow the link or the QR code In the summer, days are pretty warm – around 25-30°C but a jacket will come in handy as some rain may appear. During autumn and spring temperatures drop to approximately 10-15°C. This bikepark is also part of the gravity card. There are several accommodation options. We were hosted by Sporthotel Semmering which in a bikepark. It has, among other things, its own swimming pool, saunas, bike room, gym and a terrace with a beautiful view of the Alps. Rich breakfasts and multi-course dinners are also available. During our summer holiday visit on weekdays, we did not experience any big queues at the cable car. Although there is little variation in terrain, the well-equipped facilities and additional activities outside the bike park make this an interesting location to explore. If you stay longer you can also make great progress in jumping on different-sized tabletops or drops in the slopestyle park. Thank you for watching and see you in the next shred reports!

  1. Hope the guy in purple went back and picked up all those rocks he knocked into the trail.
Don’t have to turn everything into a side hit. 🤦‍♂️
