  1. Work on the breaking power: New cables, overhaul the brakes, new pads and perhaps the levers, and consider switching from steel rims to aluminium ones. That would give you the possibilty to add a hub dynamo in the front if light is of the essence and switch to a (period correct) internal gear hub in the back (Sachs Torpedo for example). Depending where you live the bandwith might be enough, it would make shifting simpler and you could add a chain guard. Additionally I would do some cosmetic works: New bar tape, move the reflector to the rack

    I recently got some buffing pads that attach to the drill and they work amazingly – I’d just polish it all up

    Nice. I don’t mind some wear showing in the paint, you weren’t shopping for a modern bike after all. I would just do basic maintenance as needed, make sure the brakes inspire confidence, and that the gearing matches the needs for your area. For daily use cruiser bars are probably more casual/convenient

    I feel sorry for you. It is an old french bike, that means weird threads. Try to keep as much as possible.
