    Remove it and check if it is in fact a 73mm bb in a 68 frame. If it is, get a 68 mm bb. At the very least, back the non drive side right off until you can fully tighten the drive side shoulder against the bb shell, then tighten the non drive side. If there is a lot of thread showing and you really don’t want to get a 68mm bb, then if you have a non drive side lockring from an old cup and cone bb use that on the non drive side to stabilize it a little.

  2. I would take it out and see if it is in fact a 73 mm BB. It would explain everything.

    If you leave it like this, I don’t think it would stay put and not make noise. Maybe if you would use like a 3 mm thick spacer on the “external” cup it would be fine, but even then the thread engagement with the BB shell is less than usual.

    I think you’ve put the BB in the wrong way round – usually the lip is on the driveside and yours is on the non-driveside….

    Shimano and others made some non-driveside lip square taper BBs in the past but yours looks new
