Okay guys. I got the memo. I won’t desecrate my dad’s bike lol.

But I do want to restore it completely for Father’s Day (I have 2 days off hopefully can kill it by then). Can anyone point me in the right direction which freewheel I can buy that will be compatible, new(er) shifters that aren’t gummy? (The ones here are STI) and some fast rolling tan wall tire suggestions? I also want to replace the cables and cable housing don’t know where to even look for this stuff and which one to buy. I guess can any of y’all help me put together a shopping list?

Make this a project you do with your dad. The time you spend together will be worth more than all the bike parts in the world.

  2. Regarding the shifters, you can probably open them up and degrease/lubricate them and they’ll work just fine with a bit of effort.

Jagwire cable housing should available at a local bike shop along with cables. I’d recommend changing the brake pads and tires. People like the Maxxis DTH tires and Schwalbe Billy Bonkers. Unclear if they’re available locally but can be ordered.

Other than that, some grease in the right spots ought to do it.

    Good luck!

  3. give it a proper clean up, retune the drivetrain and oil up the chain if the chain is still good. leave the rest as-is. that bike might have stories and now you are about to mess with something u don’t know

  4. Do you actually know for a fact that the shifters are gummy, or is this just because someone mentioned it can be a problem with DX/XT shifters? Perhaps your dad has been keeping them fresh.

  5. Diamond Back lessssgooooo! Beautiful bike and the condition looks mint. So great.
