Alright. Listen, I have NEVER in my adult life owned a bike. Next year (2026) I am doing Vättern runt. Which is a 300km (186 mile) "race" to get around one of Swedens biggest lakes.

It does not have to be fast per se, and the bike should preferably be on the cheaper side (read between $500-800) if possible. I've read that "Racer" bikes is to be preferred.

I am looking at second hand bikes and came across this Trek Madone 5.5, 2009. They are asking ~$500 for it.

Picture of said bike

  • First of all, is this a good bike to ride for 300km (186 miles)?
  • Is this a good price for this bike?

General:

  • What should I be looking out for when buying a second hand racer bike?
  • Is it even possible to buy one between $5-800?

I thank you for your help and have a great rest of your day!

Edit: I am a 35 year old male, if that makes any difference.

Edit 2: I am not looking to get a great time or anything in this "race". I just want to get around. So no real time limit or such.

Your better off getting somthing more modern. That trek looks at least 10 years old. I’d rather something newer with worse components then something old with better, I see an ultegra on the crank, which is good. But that’s gotta be ancient.

Do you have a decathlon near you they have great beginner bikes, but you can buy used ofc and get a great deal.

You don’t need a fancy bike to race 300km. Not at all. Don’t believe anyone who tells you you need a more expensive bike.
