Warnemünde, a charming district of Rostock, has a rich and diverse history dating back to the Middle Ages. The first documented mention of the town dates back to 1195. The name Warnemünde derives from the estuary of the Warnow River into the Baltic Sea.

Warnemünde experienced its first heyday in the 13th century, when it developed into an important trading hub. The town had been part of Rostock since 1323. In the following centuries, Warnemünde was primarily a small fishing village and port town.

In the 19th century, Warnemünde began to develop into a popular seaside resort. The first bather was recorded in 1821, and in the following decades, numerous hotels, guesthouses, and villas were built. Warnemünde developed into a fashionable seaside resort, which was also visited by wealthy citizens from other parts of Germany.
