I have used Reddit so much for info on bicycle touring and cycling in general that I wanted to give back a little to the community. I am quite new to bicycle touring.
The route was Amsterdam > Utrecht > Apeldoorn > Train to Rotterdam > Kinderdijk > Train to Vlissingen > Ouddorp > Leiden > The Hague > Haarlem > Amsterdam.
Here are some tips/thoughts/highlights:
– The Netherlands has to be the best country to ride a bicycle ! The infrastructure for cyclists and the drivers’ were amazing. I felt so safe riding here.
– The whole country has a vast network of dedicated cycle paths that connect everything and everywhere together.
– Most cities has secure bike parking. Most hotels have bike parking or let you bring your bike to your room.
– Having a folding bike was super helpful since you cannot take bikes onto trains at peak times. It was super convenient to ride to a train station, fold up my bike, stick it in a bag, and go.
– Amsterdam was a bit chaotic to bike in since there are so many bikes and so many tourists but once you get used to it, it was kinda fun.
– Palais Het Loo was well worth the little detour and the Hoge Velum (National Forest) was amazing to cycle through ! There is a wonderful art museum inside (Kroller-Muller Museum and Sculpture Garden).
– Kinderdijk was surreal to bike around. Even more so since I was there during a rainstorm so I had the area almost all to myself.
– Rotterdam was a lovely stop for couple of days. Super ethnically diverse with amazing modern architecture and food.
– The route along the North Sea can be a bit windy but it was worth the effort to ride on the Delta Works (largest storm surge barrier in the world) with many modern windmills towering above you.
– The little passenger and bike ferry across the Hook of Holland was super memorable.
– I loved the vibe and feel of The Hague
– Museum Voorlinden just outside of the The Hague is one of the best modern art museums I have ever been too. Well worth a little detour.
– Leiden was the prettiest town that I saw in the Netherlands.
– Sand dunes area around Haarlem was beautiful and very tranquil to ride through.
