Hello, this was my grandfathers bike, it’s a Murray Westport. It says American made which is pretty cool. It’s been sitting in my parents basement since he passed which was before I was born in 95.

Should I take it out and ride it? Would I look cool or dumb? There isn’t much info about this bike so I doubt it’s that valuable unfortunately but being American made I bet it’s at least pretty good quality.

PS sorry about the mess and not great pictures of the bike.

  1. I hate to burst your bubble, but Murray bicycles were low quality, and inexpensive. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value to you, as it was your Grandfather’s bike. Enjoy it for the sentimental value. 🙂

As others have said, it’s greater value in the sentimentality of it being your Grandfather’s. You’re not gonna go fast or do big miles on it, but it’s still a good bike to knock around the neighborhood, ride with the kids or run errands.

Gotta love Murray. They painted the frame AFTER the headset bearing cups went in. I’ll bet the fork was installed too, so they could paint it all as a single assembly to save some pennies.

On the one hand, Murray is bottom tier. I mean, it’s kind of shocking the corners they cut.

On the other hand, it’s hard to mess up a beach cruiser. And a clean Murray is pretty unusual. It’s also pretty. I love the color and the lack of kitsch bolt-on accessories gives it a nice clean, and actual vintage look, even if it’s a reproduction.

Keep a good coat of wax on everything. Watch some youtube videos on how to grease the bottom bracket, and wheel bearings.

It’s cool for being what it is. Not worth a lot, but with some care, it will serve you well for years.
