Hi everyone,

I’m new to this subreddit but not very new to bikepacking. I want to ride my bike from the Netherlands to Turku around July/august because a friend of mine lives close to Turku. I have to take some ferries underway and especially the ferry from Stockholm to Turku is a long trip. I don’t want to make a reservation beforehand because I don’t know when I will be there. I just have a normal trekkingbike with some bags with me. I put a screenshot of my route estimation.

Does anyone know if I have to make a reservation for the ferries underway, or can I just bike towards de ferry and buy a ticket at the ferrystation?
And if there is a waiting time, how long would that be, a day, or more like a week?

Thanks in advance!

Most likely not an issue, but I’d contact the companies directly to be sure. Multiple Ferries daily from 2 different companies.

Ages since I took one of those ferries, so I don’t remember how it goes exactly.

  2. Stockholm to Turku you can just walk to the terminal and get a ticket there, any day of the week, multiple ferries a day. Might be a bit cheaper to buy in advance though, also the ones that leave in the morning tend to be cheaper.

EDIT: Also if you are interested there is a very popular bike route on the Finnish side islands on you route you could do called “saariston rengastie” or “the archipelago trail”. Just throwing that out there.

Hi! I live in Turku so I will try to help with the Stockholm-Turku part. There are at least two cruise operators (Viking Line and Silja Line) that travel between Turku and Stockholm on a daily basis. I have always reserved my ticket in advance online and I actually have no idea if you can buy a ticket at the harbour or not… So I would recommend buying a ticket beforehand. It’s relatively easy to do and AFAIK the ticket can be purchased up to 30 minutes before departure. However, as you are travelling with a bicycle, you will need to be ready to board the ship at least 30 mins beforehand (this applies to all vehicles). I hope that clears some things for you. Have a nice trip!!

  4. The ferries does not need a reservation for cyclists.

Don’t ride the Swedish coast. It’s not too beautiful but has lots of traffic. Ride between the big lakes instead and avoid any bigger roads. Alternative route from Germany to Denmark: Puttgarden-Rødby

  5. How do you guys do those long rides? I „only“ have 30 days of vacation per year. Unpaid leave? Sabbatical? Quitting?

Go through the islands in Denmark as your current plan is, it’s lovely!
